Lack of productivity can hit you under various underlying medical conditions or social environments, and illnesses. Your logical mind can be compromised under various situations and this is one of those. It's not just as simple as "oh, I decided to do that so I do that". The human brain and body are not that simple. Believing in the myth of oh, he/she can just do that to get out of his/her problems is partly superficial.
It's never about it being acceptable, hell, the one who is suffering from it is the one that wants to kill themselves. Even then, the ones you think are being accepted, are not accepting themselves.
You need those people to be able to heal, logically, morally and economically it's much much better that way. Why do you think letting a person who had 20 years or many years of education go to rot in the dirt? Is that a good thing for society? No, it's not. And when they die, it causes other people stresses and potentially makes others fall into mental illnesses as well. Why not cure them and make an example so they can help more people like themselves? Empathy is not the same as acceptance of wrongdoing.
I think you never come into contact with depression patients, some of which, are or were incredibly talented people with good hearts, but they can't fight back on behavioural addiction (which is a part of depression, and mental illness) themselves. Why do you think we need medication to adjust body chemical and biological functions for those patients and rehab camps? It's never only about the mindset.
I recommend you research more about such topics before passing such harsh judgements on people like that. Life is a long journey. If one can come back and help others it's a great thing.
There are two parts to fighting these increasing mental illnesses, preventing them from happening and helping people who are suffering from them to get out of them.

You could be on to something. One hundred years ago, mentally ill patients were treated worse than criminals. To be mentally ill meant something worse than leprosy. Now, as it's become recognized as a true illness, more and more people think they have it, sort of like a pandemic. So perhaps the problem is that doctors are diagnosing things as a disease which are, frankly, the human condition. The sadness, anxiety, and fear are perfectly normal: to live is to suffer. Many philosophers have proposed how to eliminate suffering. They did not have the luxury of modern medicine yet managed to find joy through knowledge, wisdom, compassion, and spiritual discipline. These things are what's missing from Western society, and cannot be put in the form of a pill.

I don't think it's really accepted, it's just that without resources to help people deal with their problems most people just stay out of it.
I agree though, you've got to face your demons not just let them roll you. This generation acknowledges that mental issues exist. The thought of an alternative is why previously the only method of ignoring it is treated more harshly. A few decades back you didn't talk about the issues, let alone figure how to deal with them. We are moving forwards.
Mental Illnesses did not even exist back in the good old tough days. Nowadays people find every little excuse to justify their actions. I've noticed that every black on white crime is a ''mental illness'' and every white on black crime is ''white supremacy''. Wake the fuck up people.
