When people say hurtful things to you do you think they realize it hurts?

today I was having lunch with my sister and she was staring at me. I asked her what was wrong and she said, "you have really bad skin. and hair. and teeth. and your eye twitches a little."

i asked her why she was telling me all that. she said, "i'm just appreciating that you got the brains and I got the beauty."

and if you guys are going to say brains are better and will get you farther, I went to a good college but I'm a minimum wage office worker because that's the only job I could find. my sister (two years younger) married an older rich guy (she's 22 and he's 45) and has everything you can imagine wanting and more. looks like she won.

My guess is that she did realize what she said, but may have not calculated how much of an impact it would have. A lot of people say things that are meant as very mild, forget-it-in-a-minute shots, but come across as deeply hurtful remarks. Another possibility may have been that she may have been having an "I feel ugly" day, and was trying to boost herself up at your expense.

Neither option are particularly nice of her, but both are extremely common events. Either way, I'd take offense at her remark. Then again, I'm a borderline personality, so I tend to take a little more offense than your average Joe. Still, if I were you, I'd be offended.

Wow, your sister is a straight up SNOB. Even if what she says is true, she definitely didn't get the charming personality. At the surface it may look like she won, but deep inside I'm sure both her and her husband are miserable. Of course she knew what she was saying, anyone with a brain would, but considering she's an absolute snob her opinion wouldn't matter the least bit to me.

Sometimes they see it as constructive criticism when all it is is hurtful. You're right. I understand how you feel.

For the longest time my sisters called me fat (I've lost weight now) & now they've moved onto calling me fat & stupid. I finally broke down a few days ago & cried my eyes out, telling them how much their words make me feel inadequate & like they don't even consider me their sister. They just told me that they're telling me the truth... And that I need to get thicker skin.

My advice to you is to let your self-worth come from your own opinion of yourself. Of your real friends. Because sometimes family doesn't necessarily mean unconditional love.

That's why I don't say hurtful things. I'm very calm and level headed and patient, because I know burning bridges is a lot harder than building them, and fighting gets us nowhere.
