Many schools reported many kids missing from class today, the day after Halloween. Their parents called in and reported them sick. One elementary school had 150 "sick" kids today, out of a total of 500.

Lol, I fail to see the surprise here. I'm pretty sure that it's the norm from year to year. These kids head out, get loads of free candy (many of which already start eating it as they're still out), then get home and gorge themselves into a frenetic, speed-like state so they're up half the night. Then they wake up tired & with stomachaches, yeah, they're really sick!!
Nah, I don't think they're sick. Halloween was so fun, we were always allowed to skip class the day after. We always went trick or treating with my sibling and my cousin, and then we spent most of the night playing mario, watching movies and eating candy and popcorn, then woke up next morning to continue playing.
School isn't more important than kid's happiness.
I think it should be changed from a date to a numbered weekend in October or the following day to a public holiday. Kids can't go out trick or treating and then watch horror movies all night or play their scary video games and what have you, then go to school early the next morning. That kills the vibe.
My kids actually got up on time and went to school. They did not, however, share their candy.

My 5 year old cracked his tooth on a lollipop so we spent all day at the dentist yesterday so he missed school.
I think some kids probably had issues like mine. Others were probably skipping out cuz they were too tired.
British newspapers are reporting a kid found a razor blade in one of his treats

But I imagine in America most those sick kids are probably just getting bullets removed
Fair enough. A lot of kids stay up late to celebrate Halloween, they’re going to be tired the next day. If it’s just one day off of school then I don’t see an issue. Lucky for the kids here it’s half term so they don’t have any school until next Monday.
Wow! Maybe parents are letting their kids go to late night Halloween parties? Or maybe their parents want to keep their kids home the day after they eat potentially poisoned candy from suspicious neighbors, just to be on the safe side?
To much candy or maybe the parents are being generous and just want them and their kid to have the day off lol they walked all night, door to door and are tired.
Parents do not place an importance on education anymore. They think nothing of taking their kids out of school to go the Disneyworld. When I was in grade school there were two of three years where I had no absences.
@Apple1996 that is very true . Kids have lost two years of school and nobody fails and everyone gets promoted I know someone who kept his kid out of kindergarten for a year because he wanted to wait until school went back to live instruction. The principal wanted to start him in first grade even though he did not attend kindergarten.
@Apple1996 It is required here but they wanted to just skip it because they probably knew that the kids did not learn anything anyway
@Apple1996 I am glad my kids are done with school. I would be the parent from hell I would be at every school committee meeting calling out the school for every little thing.
Late at night getting candy.. what do you expect? Parents probably gave them a free pass of: “you don’t need to go to school tomorrow”, type deal. It’s not shocking really this happened.
The school should have required a doctors note. If there was no note, unexcused absence- ruining perfect attendance (like that matters to a lot of kids anymore). Hopefully they had a test today and now they have to make it up.
What did these kids do, eat their whole bag of candy in one binge sitting? No wonder they all were sick the next day.
I mean they either are sick from candy or maybe their parents want to give them day off after a long night. Every kid deserves a “sick day” here and there 😅
With kids knowingly going to be out late at night with a sugar high, perhaps schools should schedule the next day off instead
Had to be dying to miss education as a kid. Guess it depends how a person is raised.
I never tried to pull that crap when I was a kid!
Sweets are a good excuse to not stay in school (Six Cold Hours Of Our Lives). Ain’t that sweet? However, I didn’t get too sick from eating too much sweet.
No idea. I got sick Sun night and just got better earlier.
Maybe there’s something going around.
I almost never get sick.
The serfs aren't where they're supposed to be... Summon the houndsman.
Seriously who cares. Probably just a bunch of over tired sugar addicts.
they were probably in a sugar coma because the ate too much candy.
Late nights and probably eating too many sweets/candy
lol November 1 is a non-student day in Newport-Mesa USD. They learned long ago to not bother.
doesn't bother me. I hate that they celebrate it on a weekday in the first place. People stay out super late, and kids eat a crap ton of candy, which is pure sugar, well past their normal bedtimes. I'd be more worried if they weren't feeling sick after that.
They probably just had too much at once, ITSSSSSS YOUR FSULTS
Lol, little kids often eat so much candy that they feel sick for a few days.
No, they just wanted an extra day off.
What is helloween?
