What complaints do you have about hospital staff?

What makes you impatient about hospital administrative staff? Do you have any stories about staff that didn't live up to your expectations or seemed stupid or unfit for the position? Things like getting information wrong, doing things to slowly, not being knowledgeable about where everything is located in the hospital? What advice do you have for people who work in these roles? Have you worked as hospital staff yourself? I'd imagine that many patients there are stressed, and so are probably extra critical of staff than they are other places, like restaurants (or maybe it's about the same there, haha).

I work as a nurse in a hopsital. I can say from experience that a lot of times to quality of care extends beyond just the individual. Though that being said there is always going to be a few bad apples of staff members that shouldn't be there and either though they would make a lot of money are maybe were good at one time and are now just too burned out to care anymore. What I've noticed though for those of us that do care is the individual nurse caring for a patient could be great but if there are not enough nurses staffed to care for all of the patients there that day even the best nurse will fail to provide excellant quality (medications, meals will be late etc). However a lot of it also depends on if everyone else works as a team, nurses do their best to help other out, the nursing assistants help where they can, the doctors answer their pagers in a timely fashion, the kitchen staff is on time, pharmacy is on time etc. Then there is always the unexpected emergency like a heart attack, stroke, code blue etc that throws everything into a tailspin. I am fortunate to work with a good team, and that management does their best to keep the floor staffed adequately but quality is going to vary per facility also as some do a better job at this then others.

I have no complaints about doctors, nurses, and medical technicians on hospital staffs. I’ve had a few regarding administrative staff, but none that went unresolved.

I’ve only stayed in a hospital once (in June this year) and will be staying at the same hospital again for my surgery in two weeks.
I shall not name the hospital but it is after almost the most expensive and prestigious private hospital in my country. With that in mind, my expectations for my stay was sky high. The customer service was great and admission for my hospital stay and day surgery was fast and easy. The hospital had a hotel feel to it and seemed luxurious and comfy.
Upon admission, I was given a menu and was asked to choose what I would like to have for lunch (after my surgery) - they had lobster soup, chocolate cake and everything in between. Everything seemed great until I was pushed into the operating theatre.
Just before they administered general anaesthetics, I saw this nurse pull down her mask and started to sneeze. She used her BARE hands to rub and clean off her mucus and she did not bother to wash her hands or adhere to any of the hygiene protocols.
There I lay on the surgical bed, watching the nurse with mucus all over her hands wondering if I was in good hands. I usually do not nit-pick but I never kid about safety and hygiene!

I notice that a lot of the respondents missed that you said "administrative" staff! They need to realize that is not the medical staff. And in many cases, with resources strained, many of the administrative staff are volunteers. They are doing the best they can with limited training, and NO PAY.

I'm of 2 minds on this. I spent about a month in the hospital last year and I learned in the first couple days, it's thier game. You have to play by thier rules or they're just going to make it more difficult on you. I'm a reasonable person, and I get they got a job to do, and not everything is always as they'd like it. Because while they're job is to get you healthy and get you discharged it's still a BUSINESS.

I kind of clashed a bit with the physical therapists. Ironically I had the best rapport with the one that pushed me the hardest.

But they had one that was almost half my size for one session put me in precarious situation. Not surprisingly I fell, luckily I caught myself. I don't blame her, she shouldn't have been handling me by herself. But she also shouldn't have put me in such a precarious situation when she was alone.

So it's not the nurses or therapists I have a problem with. God love them for the hard work they do. It's the hospital bureaucracy I have a problem with. Especially for what we pay in Healthcare. It really doesn't trickle down to the Healthcare workers.

I’ve only have one issue with a specific doctor in the emergency room. And apparently I’m not the only one. People have left and gone to other towns hospitals when they find out he’s the doctor on rotation at that point in time.

I remember injuring my knee, to the point it was swollen and I missed 2 weeks of school because I was unable to walk. We’d gone to the ER and he said I simply twisted it and to just rest and it’ll be fine. I actually had torn my meniscus as well as part of my ACL.

Now I do have a knee condition where the kneecap gets pulled out towards the outer quad muscle and the bones twist then it goes back in. And that’s what I was visiting the ER for that night (the kneecap had pulled and the bones shifted while I was in the shower). At that hospital everyone’s always been amazing except for that one doctor.

Not really. If anything, they have it rough.

If they work at the hospital call centre manning hotlines, you can be sure that they get blasted on a daily basis by uncooperative, unreasonable patients and entitled family members.

Its really annoying. And yet, they have to bear the scolding and rough words although none of it was their fault.

If we are talking about receptionists and cashiers, they get it rough too. So many patients and family members are fed-up with their situations and precardiments, and their frustration/anger is evident with the way they treat the administrative staff.

Every single admin staff I have met during my hospital check-ups and visits have been really polite, professional and nice in general. I make it a point to be nice to them too. A little kindness goes a long way in making someone's day.

Just the doctors, patients tend to be treated by how much the hospital will make from them. They take advantage of ignorant family members and make sneaky (legal but hurtful) decisions.

they were willing to let my dad die, if I wasn’t familiar with medicine then I would have let them. But I knew better and challenged the staff and he got the treatment he needed. He lived another 3 years.

just because doctors are educated doesn’t mean they care about their patient’s well being.

not all are like this, of course, but enough are that everyone should take care.

Though most medical staff take your jib seriously, some don't. I was visiting someone in the hospital once and rode the elevator with a male and female nurse, who were joking over a mistake someone had made by connecting another gas where the patient's oxygen should have been connected. They thought it was very funny, and only stopped laughing when I stared at them.

In Canada our health care is paid for through our taxes but the wait times are disgustingly long. I get that they are busy but people waiting in pain to be treated is horrible. I always get a chuckle when talking to friend in the USA that say oh at least your health care is free. It’s not and our service sucks. Our system is broken

In my several hospital experiences over the last couple of years, staff behavior has run the gamut from excellence to gaslighting sadism.

I know things have been crazy for them the last couple of years, but bad behavior shouldn't be tolerated in any field.

On admin staff, people like my Aunt act like they know everything despite being an observer at best.

On actual hospital staff, nurses are the most annoying. They think very highly of themselves despite not hsving much backing behind that since the doctors and surgeons are doing 80% of the important work. Also most nurses are hoes but that is an entirely tangent discussion.

Emergency room wait time, one time I was in there and this poor lady next to me was screaming her butt off in pain. The other one was a lady on the floor crying cause she must of been in major pain as well. It was pretty bad. Nurses these days seem to have attitude, which I get it cause they are tired and just want to go home. 13 to 16 hr shifts would have me mentally and physically drained.

Yes we all have had our frustrating moments but I would feel it unfair to complain against them in general. I was recently there watching over my wife and I was closely following how short staffed they are and how randomly they get called from all the rooms. Just like we had to wait too long for a response, I could see that rhey were attending to us, there were other poeple paging then constantly and they were ignoring. It is a crazy tough job to be in.

I believe medical workers fall into two extremes - very very very virtuous - very very very wicked. In between is less common. Just like among disabled people - very very very good and very very very bad is more common then normal.

I have none. I kind of hate it when people complain about them. They have a rough job and many to look after. They can't be there right when you need them. They don't have esp to know when to be there.

I dont really have complaints, but I stopped going to my dermatologist cause they just wanna give me cortison creams for my severe eczema which i try to avoid at all costs because of the long term side effects. I think eczema also have other factors involved like food intake, mental illness, sleep, environment etc. but the dermatologists never talk about that stuff. So I begin to think that the dermatologist won't benefit me at all.

I have nothing but good things to say about the staff at my local hospital. However the staff at some of the doctors offices leave a lot to be desired. Bad service and conflicting regulations make it a lot harder to get proper healthcare.

Oh no, i have no complaints about the medics or the healthcare. Most of them aim to fix my Health and go beyond that. isn't that why my money goes to them?
