Has anyone had back surgery, i. e., Microdiscectomy or a similar low back surgery?

Am anticipating having this done at some point in the near future and understand that it is still considered a "major" procedure. Google report said 12 week recovery time, and that before sending you home, they want to make sure you can 'pass urine' and that scares me.

Anybody have experience? I'm seeing a surgeon in Newport Beach that I have seen before and had an epidural at that time. My appointment is Thursday.

You may want to google "microdiscectomy outcomes" for many articles discussing procedure efficacy. After reviewing much of the literature myself (I once thought I would need this) I would definitely have it, but that is just me. I concluded it had a high probability of making the pain better and a very low probability of making anything worse.

I used to have chronic back and shoulder pain until I learned how to strengthen it and the necessary nutrition to go alongside this. What I've learned since then is even better. What happened to your back?

5mm extrusion at L5 - S1 have been doing Yoga for several years, with back and 'core' strengthing" Crunches, et cetera. Even have a 'hammock' from yoga classes so I can suspend by my Sacrum to take the pressure off. Really maddening and have no idea what caused it?

By the way, isometrics would be the safest and most effective way to strengthen the entire body / core. Providing it's done correctly.

Thank you for the on-line link re disc protrusion. I read it all, and have over a period of time, done all, or most all of the recommendations, including the 'decompression, as I referred to above. I can suspend briefly in my garage from my Sacrum, but as you know, it can be stressful hanging upside down, with blood running to the head and face.
I have read a lot about the "microdiscectomy" procedure, and I know it can be anxiety inducing, to contemplate.
At this point, Ibuprofen relieves the pain considerably, but eventually it is back. Spoke to a woman who had it done, and she showed me the small incision, in her low back, and she said she was 'fine" afterward.
I am going through Newport Orthopedic Institute, and they are tops in Orange County.

I had a feeling you would have already tried all of what was mentioned on the website. But for pain relief, Ancient purity organic sulfur is really good. Other brands like Opti MSM are pretty close.

DMSO is the best natural pain reliever but it is dangerous to use along side medication or pain killers (increases their power and / or absorption), makes you stink of garlic and has to be thoroughly understood before use. It promotes rapid healing and can even dissolve blood clots. I've seen it regenerate skin in real time... it's that powerful. A friend of mine that had an accident where their tooth punctured a hole inside their lip... the hole was healed in one night after use of DMSO!

You mentioned the Epidural. It's a shame you didn't know about the Dragon Door Isochain back then because that is a form of exercise that involves no movement (Isometrics) and provides natural pain relief. Doing static upright row, and static dead-lift would have likely given a huge difference. It builds up all of the tissue around areas that dynamic lifting simply cannot improve. You can do 20 second holds of any traditional lift that strengthens the back with zero risk of injury. It would be a good idea to get advice from a specialist about it though.

Magnesium oil spray should also help too.

I'm familiar with DMSO as I used it when I ran/raced/competed, but never considered it in this case. I am certain that the Surgeon I am seeing, will want me to have an MRI before doing anything, as that is Standard procedure, for this stuff, and hopefully, the extent of the 'extrusion' is not more that it was two years ago.

Very interesting that you used DMSO for running! That was mentioned in the book too. I've used it internally and externally for health for years.

Our bodies ability to heal is much vaster than we realise. It wouldn't surprise me if audio subliminal over time would help you too. Coupled with the knowledge gained from the book 'You Are the Placebo: Making Your Mind Matter by Joe Dispenza ' You might be surprised what you can do.

I know subliminal works because I've reversed gray hair (I've had for the last 10 years) with them. Also strengthened my teeth!

If your subconscious mind was directed to heal those specific areas of your back repeatedly every single day for over a month... I wonder what the body would do in response to that. The audio cannot be heard because it's at a frequency beyond our range, but our auditory cortex picks it up and it goes straight to the subconscious.

We've ell been taught we either cannot heal, or that it is very limited. Eventually our subconscious believes this and acts accordingly...

Try everything else possible before back surgery and talk to 3 different ortho surgeons to make sure you're getting the same advice. If you do need surgery, it is extremely advanced now, so chances of success are better than any other time.

Thanks for your input. After the epidural, two years ago, I thought I was home free, but could not go back to running again without some back pain. Most of us fear back surgery.
