Why does the crocodile which so terrifies Captain Hook in the story of Peter Pan have a clock in its stomach?

I think it’s merely two of Captain Hook’s biggest/ known fears, being combined.

He is in ‘never land,’ and as an adult, he doesn’t want to age any further. Clocks remind him of time and aging. He fears it.

The crocodile is just a sea creature any sailor could face if/ and when in the right kind of waters.

A bunny wouldn’t be in the water, and if it were a turtle in there, Captain Hook wouldn’t be afraid. A croc is an aquatic creature, and it’s scary.

I don’t remember, but I think if Peter Pan hadn’t cut off his hand, his hand was eaten by the croc. 🐊

I wish there would be many deeper things to this, but I think it’s just very simple.

Maybe even, the story writer was afraid of Crocs? 🤷‍♀️

I always thought it had to do with the greatest fear of one of the few adults in a land of boys who didn't know age or mortality. The crocodile did bite his hand off, injuring/disabling him but not fatally just like time does to all of us.

Although they didn’t want to leave or be responsible lol

I guess that was just fearing responsibility then? Work probably lol

I suppose they just feared adult work anything that seemed boring

If allowed to remain permanently children (say, remain on parents health plan until age 26) why would anybody grow up and move out? If they could produce a feast by thinking it into being, they never had to work an adult job. If they could live in a cave in a land of eternal summer, why worry about the cost of coal in London?

It's a metaphor, it represents time chasing after him.

This is what I always thought it was. Hook is one of the few adults in a land of boys who don't have to grow up. His nemesis is his mortality, represented by a deadly beast and a clock. One of which will end him. Will it be a blaze of glory or lingering death? The boys don't have these fears, so don't have a reaction to clock or beast.

I could be wrong, but I think I remember it was originally that when he ate hook's hand, he also swallowed his watch.
