How do you recover from being in an active shooter situation

Figure out why is it bothering you. I mean not the "duh... cause... active shooter" answer. I mean the precise specifics of it. A lot of us in the military and or law enforcement have been shot at. It's part of the job. It obviously affected you more/differently/longer. I've had... I guess... a dozen close calls that I can remember. I don't mean the times I've been shot at I mean the times I was either hit or they came REALLY close. The first one was kinda rough. There were a couple in the middle there that really had me thinking "ah I'm about to punch out."

For ME... MY specifics of why it bothered me was that my family would be greatly upset, and that I felt as though by dying I'd let them down. Also that I wouldn't be there for them anymore, which is kind of my job, right? So what did I do, well the first thing I did was sure as shite spend some more quality time with them than I had before. I did everything I could for them when I got home. Even got an annuity for my mom so she'll be good financially in perpetuity. Need help with the shelving unit that's been messed up for a while? Sure, we'll knock it out this weekend. I'm not saying you should do this, because all our journeys are different, but for like 3 months I was knocking out honey-do lists for everybody I was associated with, because I realized that you can't put it off forever if you punch out the next day. Once people ran out of ist for me to fix it felt like a weight was taken off me, and every day I spend quality time with my loved ones. "I'm too tired" isn't a phrase anymore.

I don't know brother... I mean I don't know you or what you're going through on the inside, so if you can't figure out what your why is then I'd say maybe go talk to someone and figure out what the why is then? What do you have to lose, ya know.

i tried to shut down certain areas where the trauma stemmed from the allow myself time to process and heal then i was cautious when i tried to let people back in. it takes time nd no easy fix but wanting to deal is the first step i found.
