Of course, you will gain weight if- over the course of time- you ingest more calories than you expend.

That said, there IS some good science that shows if you "front load" your day- more protein and calories earlier in the day and taper off throughout the day- that it will be easier for your body to cope with the overall demands put upon it. "Eat like a king at breakfast, a prince at lunch and a pauper at dinner" is an old analogy to explain it. The farmers really had it right- getting up at 4:00 am to milk the cows, do some field work and THEN sit down for a fully satisfying, meat-containing, breakfast- and then getting on with the day's work. Mom would bring sandwiches out to the workers in mid afternoon, and so it would go.

A more recent way of explaining it is the concept of "protein sufficiency". Your body will have a natural drive to consume food until a certain sufficient level of protein is reached. If you eat more protein earlier in the day, that target is reached sooner, and the drive to eat empty calories is lessened in the hours following.

One of the bigger problems for me of going to bed on a "full stomach" is that it greatly increases the likelihood that I will have heartburn and/or the pukies.

The concept of gaining weight from eating at night is often associated with the idea that your metabolism slows down during the evening hours, making it more likely for excess calories to be stored as fat. However, the relationship between weight gain and eating at night is not as straightforward as it may seem.

Weight gain ultimately comes down to the total number of calories consumed versus the number of calories burned throughout the day. If you consume more calories than your body needs, regardless of the time of day, you can potentially gain weight.

Eating at night can be a concern for some individuals because it can lead to mindless snacking or overeating due to boredom, stress, or habit. Late-night eating can also be associated with choosing less healthy food options such as high-calorie snacks, sugary foods, or processed foods.

Another factor to consider is the timing of your meals in relation to your overall daily calorie intake. If you consume the majority of your calories at night and consistently exceed your energy requirements, it can contribute to weight gain. However, if your nighttime eating is within your overall calorie needs and consists of balanced, nutritious meals and snacks, it is less likely to lead to weight gain.

Ultimately, it is important to focus on your overall eating patterns and habits rather than solely blaming weight gain on eating at night. Maintaining a balanced diet, controlling portion sizes, and incorporating regular physical activity are key factors in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. If you have concerns about your weight or eating habits, it is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian for personalized advice.

The calories that come from your late night meal or snack don't have a chance to get burned off - and thus, get stored as fat.

Also - it depends on your food choices. Often at night, it's easier to get into mindless eating - or indulging on foods that aren't as healthy (chips, cookies, etc.). 🙂

No. This is a myth. Your body doesn’t understand time of day. That would be your body automatically adjusts to time zone changes if traveling, which isn’t true. You gain weight from eating way more than you burn a consecutive amount of times

The most significant factors about weight gain or loss, in my experience, are intake and metabolism. So, in a very simplistic explanation, here's what I know.

People with very high, active metabolisms can burn more calories throughout the day than those with low metabolisms. For most people, nighttime is when your metabolism slows down and it burns off the intake from the day. If you're loading up with more calories at night, it will have that much more work to do. If you've a low metabolic rate, it won't keep up and convert what remains into stored fat.

Since carbs are the initial source for energy, then ingested fats, your body will burn what you put in it the next day first. It won't start burning stored fats until it has no other source for energy, but hunger usually causes you to feed yourself and give your body an energy source. So you can see where this is going.

For many people, late night eating isn't a great idea especially as you get older. For some, it makes no difference for weight loss or gain but possibly for digestive issues. For others, it makes no difference at all. You have to know your body.

It's not the time you eat. I can't explain the reasons, but you need to separate the time of your last meal from bedtime. Going to bed shortly after a meal messes with your digestive system. This leads to the three things you should be mindful of when it comes to lifestyle changes. I don't like the word diet because you lose weight and keeping it off means lifestyle changes. Those 3 things are 1. What you eat and 2. how much you eat and 3. when you eat it (as it relates to bedtime)

I tell people all the time if you are in the 40 to 50 pounds over OR higher please be under a physician's care as you do this. BUT please do it!

Yes, most overweight people should start off by drinking as much water as possible (Im no expert, but I would say 4 bottles a day is a good start) and get into the habit of cutting yourself off from eating less than 4 hours before you go to sleep. The difference will be huge.

This is probably more specific to me but lunch is the most important meal of the day for portion control reasons. Cutting sugar and pressed oils is another secret weapon.

People have different schedules. It doesn't really matter when you eat. It's calories in/calories out. You gain fat if you eat too many calories and don't do enough exercise. You gain muscle and bone weight when you put your body under a lot of strain when you have a good amount of calories in your system.

    You can.
You gain weight because you eat more than your body needs.
For women it is around 1,200 copies a day, and that is for healthy foods, low fat, low carbs.
For men it is around 1,800 calories a day.
A bound is roughly 3,500 unused calories.
So eat less, eat better and move more.

I’ve read our metabolism slows at night. So less of that is good. I keep a glass pitcher of water next to my bed and it’s the best thing I’ve done for myself in a while.

Water tastes better out of glass and it fills your stomach when you “think” you’re hungry. Also I think I’ve been low key dehydrated my whole life…

It depends on what you eat. If you carbs at night changes are you might gain some weight. I personally stop eating anything after lunch and if I snack during the afternoon it's usually something healthy like fruits.

well considering you are probably going to bed soon if it is night yes, because you body can't digest the food properly and you are not moving around so usually ends up in weight gain.

You gain weight when you consume more calories than you burn.

Does not matter if you eat vegetables or cake.

(Please note that this only considered weight, not healthy eating)

Nothing makes me gain weight. I weigh exactly the same weight as I was when I played sports in high school. So no, makes no difference what time of day I eat.
