Malaria is back. Are you being careful around mosquitoes? ?

Another disease we have not seen in the US is making a comeback. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes and could be fatal.

I'm always careful. Mosquitoes are the deadliest creatures on the planet, seriously. They are vectors for so many diseases around the world. Malaria, yellow fever, Dengue fever, Zika virus, West Nile virus... they're all pathogens that are carried and spread by mosquitoes. They kill so many people in countries with poor access to adequate healthcare and medications.

I'm in Canada, so I'm not super worried about some of these diseases, but I'm still careful and use the strongest bug spray I can get here whenever I'm spending significant amounts of time outdoors. I'm careful with ticks as well - I will do tick checks on myself as well as the dog if we've been walking through parks or wooded areas.

You can discourage mosquito settlement and reproduction on your property by not having any sort of standing water - for example bird baths, landscaped ponds or still water features, etc.

Yes, I will go around and dump all the standing water. I just wonder what will show up next? Small pox maybe?

I doubt it, unless the last sample of live virus at the CDC gets out. I would actually worry more about the comeback of diseases like measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, pertussis, etc. All of those resurgences are due to lower rates of infant and childhood vaccinations over the last 25 years or so, dating back to Andrew Wakefield’s “study” on the MMR vaccine and autism. Also because people don’t get their DTaP boosters when they’re supposed to.

Bugs love to bite me so I have to put on bug repellent all the time when I'm outside. I once got bit by a fly on my hand and my hand blew up like a balloon. I'm allergic to bug bites and getting stung

I used to always get attacked by them but when I fell pregnant I never got a single bite ever. I guess I have been careful

So far there isn't much malaria in the US, but its potentially a huge risk. I do take serious precautions when traveling to malaria areas.

The anti-malaria drugs are really unpleasant so I very much hope we get it under control in the US

It was on the news. It has not been seen in the US for decades. Now it is making a come back. in several states.
It was just a few weeks ago we learned polio is back. Tuberculosis is also on the rise again.
What could possibly cause all these cases of diseases we have not seen in many years?

Well, people travel more and more nowadays and it takes only one person to get in contact with someone who's infected to start spreading these viruses. You get malaria from mosquitoes not from infected people.

That's also why is so important to always carry a repellant with you when travelling. You should always spray your bags too mosquitoes can literally fit anywhere.
