I love fireflies. It's so neat walking through the woods at night and seeing all the fireflies lighting the way. You do know that what they are doing is attracting a mate... so when you see a firefly, you're watching Mother Nature's sex in action.

Where I live in the USA, we always had something similar called Lightening Bugs, so maybe different countries/continents call them different names. I could be wrong.

I have not heard or read that. Right now in the US, I am hearing that they are more plentiful than they have ever been. Catching lightning bugs at dusk goes back to the innocence of childhood.

I do. If they fly close to me I'll catch them and just let them crawl around on my hand until they decide to fly away. Same with ladybugs. Although ladybugs DO bite sometimes, it doesn't hurt at all and, they're completely harmless, just like lightning bugs.

  Oh, but fireflies DO come up in conversation.
  
  At the usual times that fireflies, oh hell, I call them lightning bugs, come up in conversation, such as, "Ooh, I see my first lightning bug tonight!".
  Or "The lightning bugs are late this year", or "Wow, there're a lot of lightning bugs tonight".
  
  It's the kind of a conversation that it usually limited to a certain time of day, and to a certain time of the year.
  
  Lol.

When I was a kid hanging out with some crazy boys one night in the neighborhood, we collected a bunch of firefly’s, put them in a jar then those jerks smashed them into the sidewalk to create artwork.. it all let up
