Going to bed with an empty stomach and not knowing when your next meal would be. Not having a clean water to drink. If there is one, you have to travel extensive mile(s) to obtain it, and by the time you reach your destination, you hardly have any water left in your bucket(s). Any scars or cuts you have, you know it's not going to heal properly or heal slowly because of lack of money to get med for it. You see your neighbors' friends die one by one because of malnutrition and etc, etc and you wonder sooner or later you'll join them, too. You can't walk to the next street over w/o seeing another soul begging for penny; you turn your head away pretending not to see them because you feel helpless. Mothers sell their twelve or thirteen y.o. girls for what but for a bag of rice for prostitution... I come from a world that has little or nothing at all; I learn everyday not to take any thing, any moment, or people for granted.. Every day is gift.

Your purchasing or productive capacity does not match a culturally proscribed standard of living. Usually, this refers to basic necessities such as food, clothing, shelter.
Living with less resources than you require to sustain the minimal necessities to stay alive.
Though I'm sure some would equate poverty with living below a socially required standard or making less than a socially accepted amount of money.
