Do orphanages and residential hospitals for the severely mentally I’ll still exist?

Traditional orphanages have completely disappeared in the US. They started to decrease in the early 1900s, and were completely gone by the 1960s. I remember a large one near me when I was young. That was for children of military parents who got killed in war.

Orphanages have been replaced by the foster system, which is a home environment with temporary parents. There may be one orphan or several. Sometimes the foster parents end up adopting the kids. Other times the kids can't legally be put up for adoption because the parents are still the legal guardian and won't sign over the kids. Kids can temporarily be taken away from parents, but I don't know if it's still legal to force parents to put kids up for adoption.

There are still group homes for special needs kids and troubled kids. These are not necessarily orphans, but kids who have serious problems of some kind.

There are lots of institutions for the mentally ill. They may be special hospitals, or more likely regular hospitals with a mental illness wing. I don't know if there are any places specifically for kids. Most mental illnesses don't hit until the teens. I suspect most large hospitals (maybe locked) have a mental illness wing, but I don't know that for sure.

There are also places for the criminally insane.

Yes they still do, in the Orphanage that i had been its still up an running.

In the US they are no longer orphanages like seen in Annie. They use foster families to house children. Yes, there are residential mental health facilities. They even have one's that house committed sex offenders who are not safe to be unattended.
