Where do people with severe mental illnesses live?

I don’t know if, in Australia, we have institutions for the mentally ill anymore. Although there are psych wards. What about in other parts of the world?

In America, a lot of them are either homeless or in communal living organizations. My job during university was as a caregiver for people with mental illnesses. We made as intentional an effort as we could to get them out into the community and make them feel like normal people living normal lives. They'd have jobs and all that

Unfortunately, there's only so much you can do. I'd like to think there's no reason someone shouldn't be empowered to contribute what they're able to with a little support. Particularly if you live in a place with the infrastructure for it.

Either homeless or in a psych ward.
Psych wards are institutions for them as they always have been, of course just in the past they were given more negative names than now and had much worse conditions. Even Psych wards can be seen as offensive name though it's a weird thing to find offensive in my opinion.

but your average joes live like anyone else for the most part
