What was your first period like?

Even though I have known about periods and knew that I’d get it someday too, that getting into “womanhood” thought freaked me out.

I was 12, was playing with my 8 and 7 years old younger cousin and suddenly felt the cramp unlike of anything I’ve experienced before.

I immediately realized that I got my period.

I took one big breath, just sat still, trying to make peace with the fact that something changed in me and it was such a bad time for this change, how was I ready to be a woman, while I was still playing with my 7-8 years old cousins?

Then I got into the bathroom and when I saw the blood, my heart started beating faster… I wanted to cry, but only few drops of tears fell on my face…

I wanted to tell someone but my mom and dad were at work and my brother was younger.

Then suddenly a strange thought came to me

“What if now that I “turned into” a woman, my mom won’t love me anymore? What if she will be grossed out by me?”

So, I decided to hide it from her.

I was hiding it from her before 13.

At 13, I told the truth, as I could not hide it forever.

I was having holidays at the village, I remember my mom driving to the village and bringing me beautiful dresses, my grandma and grandpa came in my room, kissed my forehead and congratulated me for the beginning of a new stage of my life.

I especially appreciated my grandpa’s sweet and kind words, because I was thinking I was gross and undeserving of love now that I had periods.

So, his words made me see that something beautiful happened in me, something worth celebrating.

When my mom came to me, she hugged me and told me she loved me.

I felt regretful for hiding it this long but I couldn’t admit to her that I was lying to her all this time because I was scared she’d be disgusted of me and she’d not love me anymore.

Since then, I learned to celebrate my periods.

It reminds me that I am a woman.

I am a woman who can create and carry life in her.

I love my body and feel blessed to have menstruation.

I never have painful menstruation and my previous partner always made me feel loved and wanted on my periods too.

I’ve grown to realize how amazing that experience was for me and that instead of shame and fear of growing up, I must have embraced my newborn femininity and must have learned how to live with it and nurture it.

I was totally shocked when I went to pee and there was red stuff in my panties. I stole one of my mom's pads, called my best friend, hoped a bus to their house so the could help me.

Sometimes I would get really painful cramps. That did not happen the first time.

I learned how great a heating pad feels. They really help and I liked cuddling with it.
