Did Popeye eat spinach because he had a vitamin A deficiency, or did he just want to increase his strength and size because he wanted to be stronger than Bluto who also ate spinach?

Bluto didn't eat spinach. Popeye was just a sneaky way to get kids to eat their spinach. Otherwise, the cartoon would've been all about Wimpy.

Iron deficiency during the depression was a major cause of pneumonia which was the leading cause of death prior to penicillin. Spinach provided Iron and Folic Acid to aid in the absorption of iron. I would wonder if the Cartoonist was receiving a stipend from the US Agricultural Dept to advertise their product. The only other source of iron has always been red meat. Not accessible to the poor.
