Is it bad for you to drink slightly rusty water?

I just bought a new tea kettle about 3 weeks ago. After I use it for tea or hot chocolate (white chocolate!), I let the water cool in it over night and then use it to fill my water bottle but, there's a ring of rust around the bottom of the inside of the kettle, now! The water in the bottle has a slight red tint to it.

I think rust alone isn't dangerous but rust particles offer bacteria nutrients and surface to replicate, that's why it's probably better to avoid rusty water. Rusty water smells often unpleasant because of bacteria development that produces gases which dissolve in water

Iron toxicity can lead to organ damage, so depends on how much you're getting. Seems a pretty shite kettle to rust, especially after 3 weeks. I've had mine for 8 or 9 years. Cost me 20 bucks or so at Tuesday Morning

Exactly! So far, the only kettles I've had to replace were because the whistle or handle broke!! Other than that, they lasted DECADES!!
Well, it's a 1 liter bottle and I've emptied it twice since the red tint started but only noticed the rust yesterday.

I'd try taking it back... or pony up for a new one... not worth the long term health risk and i think the taste is so potent it'd tint everything anyway

I do not want to say that is NOT dangerous

but you say there's a TINT so that is definitely not a good thing, because it would be overexposure

so do something about it, to get all that rust off first

I'm gonna take the damn kettle back!! I've had 3 or 4 other kettles in my life and NEVER had a rust issue with any of them! In the meantime, looks like I'm back to boiling the water in a pot!

All decent kettles are made from stainless steel which will not rust I've had my kettle for about 10 years and there is no sign of rust yet.

Iron oxide is used for colouring in foods but its going to affect the taste.
