What happens if you eat too much melatonin?

I take one before I go to bed but the other night I take two because one didn't seem enough, I had some terrible nightmares. Was it because of melatonin?

Firstly, melatonin doesn't help you sleep. My doctor prescribed it for me, it made me agitated and vaguely nauseous. And I didn't sleep.

Taking a larger dose won't help either. You're supposed to take it every night and go to bed at the same time and eventually "the magic happens" apparently.

All I know is that it either doesn't work on me anymore or I need a higher dose than 10 mg. So far I never had unpleasant effects such as nightmares, however I didn't have pleasant effects either apart from the first times I tried it. My mind simply refuses to relax. Oh well.

I've heard that if you supplement things your body naturally produces, then your body stops making it. Maybe you're dealing w something like that?

It doesn't make me sleepy. I talked to a kid that was in the Iraq war. He told me it was excruciating heat. I asked him how he could sleep. He said that total exhaustion will do the trick. That's what works for me.

Melatonin is naturally produced in the human body. If you take extra melatonin, your body produces less. Blue light blocks production of menatonin, wear blue light blockiing glases and let your body thy to get back to norman menatinin production.

Nothing. there's no known side effects to it as long as you take only the prescribed amount.

I sometimes take Melatonin to fix my fucked up sleep schedule. I never hard any noticeable sideeffects like bad dreams and such

I don't know if this has been scientifically proven but you're not the first person saying they experience nightmares after taking melatonin. I personally never took more than the recommended dose and never experienced any nightmares after taking it.

Too much of anything is obviously not good for. As far as melatonin goes yeah bad dreams is a common side effect more prevalent if you take too much. In addition in very high amounts you can die. You would need around 200 mg for that though.
