Girls, What does a speculum feel like?

Unpleasant. It starts with the insertion, which feels akin to putting a pair of giant children’s safety scissors inside. Then they open it, which is again a very unpleasant sensation, like stretching your legs too hard only inside of your torso. The worst part is the reason why they open you up, to scrape your cervix to get a sample, imagine the deepest burning sensation you can imagine and there’s nothing you can do to soothe it but sit there and wait for it to stop. It’s not fun. You would hate it. The relief when it’s taken out and everything is over and done with is not enough, but you can usually ignore the pain long enough to get back to your car and go home.

The speculum is kind of big, made out of metal so it's cold. It hurts me when the doctor puts it inside. It's very uncomfortable. It is humiliating. I hate them and can't wait until it's over.

When I go to get my pap smear, I tend to keep closing my legs while the doctor is down there. He has to ask me to please open my legs wider. 🙂🤭

It’s a medical exam. Okay? The doctor opens you up, scrapes some cells from the cervix, and then, the speculum is removed. Nothing pleasurable or sexual about it. It’s just one of those things we have to endure. Better?

Yes, it feels like you’re being stretched. The vulva is literally held open by the speculum. I can only speak for myself, but yes, it’s quite vulnerable. This is why I prefer a female gynecologist.

Yes. It’s a screening for cervical cancer. In its early stages, cervical cancer has no symptoms. By the time a woman starts having symptoms, it’s too late. At that point, the cancer is either stage III or IV.
