Why does blowing my nose make me want to pee?

When I wake up in the morning, before I get out of bed, I often have to blow my nose. Whenever I do, I get the urge to pee, so I get out of bed, go into the bathroom, and empty my full bladder.

Does that happen to anyone else?

I know it's physically impossible to sneeze and pee at the same time. Maybe this is similar?

Ah! That’s likely one of two possibilities. The least likely is due to something called the Valsalva maneuver. (That’s where you increase the blood pressure in your head by bearing down, either by tightening your abdominal muscles and diaphragm without allowing air out of your lungs, or by doing the same, but making short “puff” exhalations). Fighter pilots do this to prevent graying, or even blacking out during high-G maneuvers! When you’re blowing your nose you perform a mild version of Valsalva’s maneuver which could cause that sensation. However, it’s more likely attributed to a phenomenon known as "parasympathetic rebound."

The body's autonomic nervous system controls involuntary functions like digestion, heart rate, and urination. It has two branches: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems

Blowing your nose vigorously can stimulate the vagus nerve, which is part of the parasympathetic nervous system. This stimulation can sometimes cause a brief activation or excitation of the parasympathetic system.

The parasympathetic nervous system plays a role in controlling your bladder and the urge to urinate. When it's activated, even briefly during nose blowing, it might create the sensation of needing to urinate, even when your bladder isn’t actually full.

People will vary in their sensitivity to these reflexes. Some individuals might experience this sensation more strongly or more frequently than others, while many may not feel anything at all.

You might want to make your health care provider aware of this. It’s almost certainly not a major issue, but as I wrote, your parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for your heart beating. While I DO NO want to give you any impression of any imminent danger, you still might want to at least make your healthcare provider aware of this, so they can monitor it, or at least see if this might be cause for concern, or even correlate to other symptoms you are experiencing. Another thing I just thought of is kegle exercises. You might simply have a weak bladder sphincter muscle, although common in women, it’s more rare in men, but that could still be a cause for your feeling the need to urinate when you increase your body's internal pressure while blowing your nose.

I sincerely hope I was able to be of at least some help, and these suggestions might lead you in a direction to finding a cause for this unusual phenomenon.

You're lucky. Turning on the water in the kitchen sink makes me want to pee, even if I had no urge to do so before I turned it on. It's so annoying!

Pressure meets pressure. Is this shocking?
Babies pressing down on bladders have similar effect only not as dramatic.
