Here are some techniques you can try to clear your mind before bed:
- Deep breathing: Inhale slowly for 5 seconds, hold for 2, exhale slowly for 5 seconds. Focus on your breathing rather than thoughts.
- Body scan: Tense then relax different muscle groups one by one from toes to head. Feel the tension release as you breathe out.
- Visualization: Picture a peaceful scene in nature or somewhere that calms you. Imagine the details to direct your thoughts.
- Gratitude list: Silently thank things/people you're grateful for, like family, health, home. Shift thoughts to positives.
- Calming affirmations: Repeat something simple to yourself, like "My mind is at peace." "I release all worries." "I trust in my ability to handle anything."
- Calming music or sounds: Try a sleep meditation, white noise app, or just nature sounds. Drown out mental noise.
- Journaling: Get thoughts out on paper then close the journal. Physically removing worries.
Don't get frustrated if it takes practice - being kind to yourself is key. And if stressful thoughts persist, talk to someone you trust or a therapist. You'll find something that works for you.
