Any cancer survivors here. My brother just had his first radiation treatment for lung cancer and he texted me that it was not bad?

I think all of us have been touched by Cancer in some way, and hope someone can give me encouragement for me to pass along to Jerry, my bother. He is two years older and has a tumor in his right lung and a tumor in his abdomen. I have been there a few time over the past months and going back next month to help him with Chemotherapy.

Anyone that can share hope is greatly appreciated.

My buddy had non-Hodgkins lymphoma maybe five years ago. Just woke up one day with swelling the size of a grapefruit under his arm. He got diagnosed and started treatment right away, chemo and all that.

I took him to a ballgame when he was on the other side of it. I have pictures from that night, and I can’t even recognize him, my friend of over 20 years at that point. No eyebrows or facial hair, and a beanie covering an obviously bald head. It was jarring to see him like that.

But…I didn’t see him for months after that, and the next time I saw him, he looked like the same guy I knew. Remarkably, this fat fuck managed to GAIN 5-10 lbs during the course of chemo🤦‍♂️😂 Said he would go through periods when he was up to eating, and other times not. So in the times he WAS, he just housed as much food as he could, and that kept his weight up. Probably a good thing to recommend to your bro👍 Plus it’s fun to clown on them about it after they’re on the other side of it, lmao. “Bro…. how you gonna get cancer and GAIN WEIGHT?”😂😂😂

But yeah, harrowing ordeal, obviously, and of course everyone’s experiences and outcomes are different, but try to keep your head up, and keep his up. Only way to go through it is with an attitude of positivity and hope.

My mom died from it. Not to be depressing, but for her the treatments got progressively more taxing.

@LiamJHayden My mother also. My brother is terrified of Chemo Therapy, but I have a woman friend who went through it and is doing well. She said she did not vomit or have really hard reaction to the Chemo, and she seems to be doing well, and is the same age as my brother.

My dad is currently in remission (unofficially) from lymphoma. The chemo treatments themselves aren’t too bad but your brother will likely feel pretty tired over the next few days, it’s perfectly normal. My dad also lost his hair after the first couple of months but it grew back pretty well. One of the most important things for you and your brother to have is a positive attitude, it may seem small but being optimistic about a treatment that’s worked for thousands of other people in the past works a lot better when you believe it genuinely helps - the physiological results of the placebo effect can really be helpful in cases like these. It’s not studied super frequently but it’s definitely something to note and keep an eye on as he moves forward with treatment, and trust that the doctors know what they’re doing.

@cupcakethedestroyer Thank you for you welcome input. I know Jerry is terrified of Chemotherapy, because of the history of it making patients terribly sick (vomiting, nausea etc) I am going back to Atlanta to see him next month for 5 days and will try to keep him upbeat.

Just make sure he stays hydrated on those days, pedialyte and gatorade might be good. The nausea shouldn’t last for multiple days, as I understand it
