What is the ideal “bedside manner” for a doctor?

I would prefer my doctor to be honest and comical. If you could choose, how would your doctor deliver his or her observations and test results to you?

I don't think there is one. I think you have to match doctor's with patients. What might be good for one patient may not be for another.

I think we need to remember doctor's are people to, trying to do a job. And it's not a glamorous job. I read like for every 20 minutes a doctor spends with a patient he spends 40 minutes with paperwork. I get a lot of that may be delegated, but it's his ass. Then you add the human aspect of it. If a doctor f***s up, people die. And people don't have your knowledge as a doctor they don't know or fully appreciate all that you know that can go wrong. It's got to be frustrating as he'll being a doctor knowing full well that your patients a lot of the time are not going to help you help them.

Of course I want honesty. But I also want hope. A doctor can't always give good news. But even with bad news I want something to fight for. Yes i agree with you on the sense of humor part. But I also understand the doctor's position. I can see why sometimes they're very serious.

Good question because there is no real firm answer. Dealing with people and their emotions can be difficult. I've known two women who both had a low-grade cancer who were offended that their respective doctors told them they had cancer. Well, did they expect the doctor to NOT tell them? I think physicians should be firm about what a patient's lab or other diagnostic results are, if it is something that needs to be addressed. They can do it in a polite way but still be serious about it.
