What does it mean when a doctor sits on the bed next to the patient on the chair?

When there's a choice of either standing across to talk, he sits on the bed next to the chair patients usually sit

It makes them seem more approachable and casual. At least from my understanding (I work with residents and physicians). That way they can "be on your level and you feel more comfortable talking to them"
