What's the big deal with hickeys?

Both me and my boyfriend are 17 and have been going out for 11 months. Last night I came come home from his house and my mom saw there was a hickey on my neck and FREAKED OUT. Like she said I looked like a major slut, but I don't understand why. IT WAS ON MY NECK, that's it... So why?

Because honestly - why would you want to be advertising what you get up to in private so publicly?

They're not romantic or cute or sweet or anything like that - it's just kind of a sign of horny teenagers getting carried away and wanting to show everyone they got lucky in one way or another. I don't know, it's not trashy to make out with a guy or have him kiss you in other places, but it's kind of not the most appealing of things to have it written all over you and show it off to anyone who happens to be looking your way.

Some things you parents and everyone else, don't want to know, and don't want to have thrust upon them.

When I was 14 we where playing truth or dare and someone dared my friend (Aaron) to give me a hickey on my neck, my mom saw it and totally freaked because she was going into overdrive thinking where else I had hickeys, she was paranoid that I had had sex so that's why, buuuut if your already having sex with your boyfriend then maybe the hickey confirmed it for her that her baby's all grown up. I dunno, just ask her. I don't think they're trashy, but you shouldn't go around showing them off so I always put concealer on :)

they're taken as a sign that you've been having sex, is that really something your mum would be happy about? even if she would be okay with it, they look trashy as it's basically like walking round with a sign saying 'i just got laid!'. your mums just looking out for your reputation :)

Hickeys are immature and trashy.

Only teenagers enjoy having hickeys in obvious places that give away their actions. Teenagers are immature enough to believe hickeys are "marking their territory."

Trashy cause why does the world need to know what you were doing? That exact mentality is the same mentality girls who sleep around have. People will perceive you the way you advertise yourself

Because hickeys are pretty much an advertisement that you hooked up with someone, and people don't usually give hickeys if you just kissed them, it's usually when you get pretty heated with someone.

I get really annoyed when my friends show of their hickeys because they are really trashy. To think a cluster of broken blood vessels is a sign of affection? It's silly.
