Have you ever had surgery, after which you were in a lot of pain for a long time?

What was your experience? How did you cope?

My doctor is recommending an operation under general anesthesia. She cautioned that I will be "in a lot of pain" for two weeks.

I'm dreading it.

I had a knee implant done in the middle of 2023, and I still have no feeling on the knee area above it to the right. I wasn't in such pain at first but once the meds wore off, I had to take pain killers at least once a day. I tried to do the best without them. The physical therapy itself was painful, and I wasn't able to bend my knee past 91 degrees when you had to go past that number more quickly. I needed another procedure to break the scar tissue that had formed around the knee, under anesthesia, and that meant more Physical therapy for 2 months. The pain was not with me all the time, but it was more mental anguish because I could not walk on my own for 7 months without a walker, and later a cane. I was finally able to walk freely the January following the surgery in June. Most people do well with this surgery and walk in 3 weeks, but I had a long journey.

I had surgery from cancer 10cm
It was in my arm
I couldn't move it if I tried, but I willed myself after a week or so
I could barely lift it up
The blood had to drain out and I had to measure it. It was my dominant arm too so I had trouble eating.
I also couldn't lay on one side and I had to let my brother watch my cat because she kept trying to climb on me, hurting me.
I couldn't wash up correctly and felt embarrassed
After a while I got use to it and slowly I could lift my arm
3 years later, the incision still hurts if someone grabs it or if I reach too far and all around it I have numbness.

I've had a new knee about 5 years ago, and a new reverse shoulder this past January.
They both hurt like hell once all of the good drugs wore off, but it passes.
I just deal with it, and it goes away, or you learn to ignore it.

I had a botched surgery when I was 20. I am now 33 and live with many issues because of it.

I went under for oral surgery, and my mouth was in a lot of pain for two weeks if I remember right. But after a while, it healed, and I was back to normal.

It will probably be awful, but if this surgery will help you out in the long-run and if it is not very likely to cause bad complications, then I think you should consider it.

I have had more broken bones & surgeries to repair them then I care to remember. The last was in 2020.. The doctors caged part of my spine & fused 4 vertebra together. The surgery was ok the after affects was very painful for quite some time. Well actually my cardiologist has been into my heart just last winter. That hurt real bad. Pain is just something I live with these days.

I have had several, including one where they put me in a medically induced coma for 4 days.

Painwise, recovering from a car accident was the worst.
