I can't speak for dying in your sleep, but, during surgery, the answer is "no".

When you are under any form of serious surgery, you are knocked out so completely that, for all intents and purposes regarding thought processes, you are already dead. When you sleep, you may dream or sense a passage of time or whatever. But, under major surgical anesthesia, you are GONE. There is nothing going on in your head. And they have to do that because they don't want you to move which you could do if you had any wisp of awareness of self.

Frankly, it's a form of heaven to be under that level of surgerical anesthesia. It is a complete and utter absence of pain... just like death.

It's how condemned prisoners should be executed: Give them that level of anesthesia, then just deliver whatever toxins cause death. Unfortunately, we don't do that.

I did and it took me a while to recognize I was in another plane of existence. I was a little disappointed when I woke up in a hospital room

I believe the process of dying feels different then living, because there was a therapy cat at a retirement residence that was rumoured to always visit patients during the hour of their death, it was like the cat could sense their loneliness and anxiety and wanted to comfort them. I do not know if this story is true though, as most public housing facilities would ban any animal a resident might be allergic to, for legal and medical liability reasons.

No, they just don't wake up. But some people have a heart attack during sleep and pass away and people assume that they died peacefully in their sleep.

No, they don't. It's better that way. My hope is to die quickly with no foreknowledge.

Who really knows? The dead don't talk to me and I do not speak ill of them. Still sounds like the way to go though..
