Therefore, i am deeply skeptical. It has been suggested that i might benefit from some form of talk therapy. So i’m gathering personal experiences here.

It's useless. They just talk to you like they're your friend.
I mostly can only find the female therapist and I got lucky once to get a male therapist and he actually helped a little, but he had to leave to another state for a higher paying position.
There's very few male therapist, so you're most likely not going to benefit from it if you're a dude.
One of the female therapist admitted to me she doesn't like to hear about other people's problems which is the whole point in the job.
There are male psych doctors, but very few male therapist. I never saw the doc and I will never take any crazy bills.
I'd rather be crazy than turn into a fat ass diabetes from those terrible pills they prescribe people. And a lot of those things can you up big time and make you depends on it.
The female therapist are really passive and most guys need a good kick in the ass to help them improve or get them motivated.
If you're a woman, you'll probably benefit from the females I guess i don't what womens experiences are though.
To me the female therapist just talks about the and never gives solutions and talks like they are your friend or never challenges you.
It's very female dominate. And if you are a guy I think you'll get more therapy from martial arts. You learn discipline and you have to focus and connect with the people around because they need you for the workout.
Or maybe just playing golf, tennis, learning a new hobby and connecting with people.
I think a sports martial art or any sport is therapy for heterosexual men.
My wife has been a Licensed Psychological Counselor for nearly 20 years, so I've seen my fair share of it. The only horror stories I've heard have just been people who do really foolish things. The counseling is just another tool that helps guide you to make your own changes. Counselors can't hand out Rx meds. That requires a Psychiatrist, actually a specialized type of MD.
If by "psychotherapy" you mean just regular therapists you talk with I've had like 20 or so at this point some therapists lasting longer than others and ultimately the work is something like 5% the therapist and 95% you. Sort of like the saying "you can lead a horse to water but you can not make him/her drink it" with you being the horse and the therapist being the human who leads you to the water.
Going to therapy and talking things out helps a lot, especially since most people in your personal life aren't trained to hear your deepest darkest secrets and complex personal struggles, but you have to actually do the work and do whatever your therapist says. And in some cases medications might be necessary. I'm personally on several.
If you're suicidal but do not want to go to the mental hospital DO NOT TELL YOUR THERAPIST YOU HAVE A PLAN TO KILL YOURSELF. Tell them that your suicidal thoughts are passive but not active and you don't have a plan. Otherwise they're obligated to call the police and take you to the mental hospital. The mental hospital kinda fucked me up personally and I've been there many times.
And yeah that's all I can think of for now I guess.
I had psychotherapy three times in my life. It was three different psychiatrists. Each time it was a tremendous benefit. The first time was the hardest and the best because I learned how to heal and grow. What you need to know is that therapy that helps is painful and hard. If you are not willing to make the effort to discover yourself and slay the demons then don’t waste your time and the time of your doctor. I found myself sitting in my car after an appointment waiting to be able to feel safe enough to drive. I am at peace and content now and I understand many ways to cope with my pain and move forward. It save me from a miserable existence and gave me a life to enjoy.
Actually, It has been a life saver. It taught me to think outside the box. (ie; not only what i was feeling but possibly what led the other people to act the way they did) interpersonal experience is a complex situation and everything can't be taken as issued, We are not children on the playground.
Only the individual can change themselves. If a barrier to changing yourself is having someone to talk to then go for it. The average benefits are statistically better than zero.
It's been quite good. Saved my life as I was going through a divorce.
My mom took me to a psychologist and he sent me home
no experience
