Tap water seems to give me a headache?

I was at the library yesterday. I usually take a thermos with water in it with me everywhere, but this time I didn't have it with me. I got thirsty so I drank water from their drinking fountain, Within maybe a minute or two I got a headache, and I also recall other times where I drank tap water I also got a headache.

This happen to anyone else? I know they put chlorine in the water supply to fight bacteria and stuff so maybe that's it?

They always seem to say that tap water is better than bottled water. I just don't see how.

I do have a filter on my sink fosseit and home that's where I drink most of my water

So I have the same problem, except it doesn't matter what I drink during the day. When I sleep I sleep with a bottle of water next to me cause I sleep with my mouth open sometimes and it drys out my mouth or sometimes I get thirsty at night. But when it have tap or filtered water I get headaches. When I have spring or purified water I don't get headache. And I can give examples. For several years I would alternate between filtered water (I have a Brita) spring water and alternatively I would get headaches, I couldn't figure what I was doing wrong. It the last two days I was at a friends house and ran out of spring water and took water from her tap (I usually dislike the taste of tap water but hers isn't so bad) so I brought home my bottle of water and went to sleep woke up three times with headaches, switched to purified water no problems. Last night drinking purified water no problems at all. So I would like to know why I can't drink tap or filtered water when I sleeep but can during the day?

Gosh you should see the tap water where I live. Its literally white when it comes out of the tap sometimes, its gross. I know they put fluoride in tap water too, but I'm not sure what would be causing the headaches though. I've actually noticed I've been having so many headaches in the past few months ever since the water went crazy, like nearly one per day.

Where I live they treat drinking water with alum, iron salts, chlorine and other oxidizing agents. Most of the chemicals leave some sort of residue in the water consumed by the end user but it a small amount.

I don't get headaches though.

@update: A lot of bottled water is tap water just put into a plastic bottle which can leach chemicals over time. If you get a water purifier and put it on your tap or the pipe leading to your tap your water will be much better.

There is tons of nasty crap in tap water. That's why I filter mine. And even with a PUR filter, I still can't get rid of the fluoride without a reverse osmosis filtration system.

Yes chlorine is in the tap water, but this is no reason for headache. I drink very often water from the tap, because I`m to lazy to open my frig. But I never got headache. So it has another reason.

Here the desinfection in Germany and I think in the USA it is about the same:

2 NAClO2 + Cl2 = "NaCl + 2 ClO2

By me at home it are max. 0,4 mg/litre

This is a gas which evaporate in differnce to the ions. The only thing what can happen is or can be the taste.

Nothing about chlorine, but it does mention it's expensive compared to the rest of Europe.

Chlorine treatment of water is common throughout the world. Chlorine burns off for the most part. The water is left in holding pools were it is chlorinated to sanitize the water and reduce the bacteria count. Most of the chlorine escapes from the water as gas into the air. By the time we drink it it does not have much left in it and many people use water purifiers in their home to reduce the few chemical residues remaining.

Well tap isn't exactly purified and you have no idea what water pipes the water has been through collecting rust and other things that you won't see.

Ugh, I'm the same way. I strictly drink Fiji brand bottled water.

Tap water makes me nauseous. That's why I avoid drinking it, yuck.
