Do you think chemotherapy is a scam?

Someone here had a theory that chemotherapy is a scam and only serves to murder people while stealing their money. They found it appropriate to block me for having rational doubts, so I'm  going to  ask what everybody else thinks. Of course if you have an opinion that differs from what is generally accepted by the entire world, solid facts would be appreciated to back it up.
Personally I'm in  Canada  where healthcare is absolutely free and chemotherapy is widely used, so I'm under the impression that the logic of it doesn't really stand. And I also know several people for whom the treatment has worked.

Chemotherapy is definitively a valid treatment. To me, thinking it's a scam shouts paranoia or misinformation.
Yes, chemotherapy is extremely toxic. The goal of the drugs IS to kill cells, but the idea is to target tumorous cells for instance. Perhaps the people thinking it's a scam do not understand that the illnesses treated by chemotherapy lead to an early death if not treated at all. All we try to do with chemo is to postpone the fatal issue.

Besides, depending on where you live, society is actually losing money through chemo.
I'll take France for instance because I know how it works here. Chemotherapy treatments for cancers are entirely paid by Social Security. Someone undergoing chemotherapy still pays the usual monthly cotisations, but because of the treatment their medical costs are WAY over the cotisation. Thus, technically, society pays and losses money for the treatment. Society isn't making any money off of it. I's completly understandable though because otherwise no one would be able to afford chemotherapy, and that's what social security is for.
As for the pharmaceutical industry murdering people with chemo and stealing their money, it doesn't make sense either. They want you ALIVE to sell more, dead people don't bring money to them.

As several users pointed out, chemotherapy saves people. It doesn't save everyone, but it's definitively not a scam :)

A last thought about prices : some meds for chemotherapy are extremely innovating. Honestly, bio-engineered drugs are extremely costly. Innovation is expensive for the pharmaceutical industries, and they need to set expensive prices to cover their expenses and make money to keep the industry running.

Well true on the fact that they definitely are making a lot of money off of cancer patients. Not to mention that its proven that chemo is not very effective. And what with all of its side effects, and harms to health. Oh lord... :'(

BAKING SODA!!! okay, yes it is effective. But the big thing is to keep on it consistently. A tablespoon of baking soda in one glass of water. Every morning. Detoxifies your body, and it is a PROVEN natural cure for cancer. But you gotta do it consistently.

Chemotherapy is definitely a valid treatment.

Yes, it's poison, and yes, it's horrible, but for those who haven't had any direct experience with it, cancer is WORSE. My god-brother, who I've grown up with my entire life, has Stage 4 Melanoma, and despite being given only months to live, he's still with us 2.5 years (and several emergency brain surgeries) later.

Without treatment, he'd have been dead long ago, but though he had a couple of rough months, most of the last 2.5 years have been a high quality of life for him.

Is chemotherapy always effective? No. Are there cases when the treatment would be worse than the disease? Yes, of course, sadly. But many, many people survive cancer that would have otherwise killed them quickly and live years, even decades longer. As extreme as the treatment is, for most people with cancer, it's the best solution.

Healthcare is not free in Canada . Its paid for via provincial public insurers funded via taxation, rather then primarily via private insurers funded by employer health premiums as it commonly is in the U. S.

If it were a 'scam', the same scam would be profitable here.

My understanding is that chemo works quite well for some types of cancers but barely effective if at all for some others. So there's no broad answer.

Its a challenging question as to whether chemo is 'worth it' for types of cancer where those who take chemo have barely better results on average then those who don't.

I'm a cancer survivor. Went through radiation and chemo. Chemo sucks... It drains all your energy. It kills cells, it doesn't care if they are your healthy cells or cancer cells. So, yes chemo can kill. But, I don't think I'd be here without it. While there may be other treatments, chemo does work.

My mother used it for years and I'm considering using it as treatment as well. In most countries outside of the US, most medical treatments cost little to nothing. That being said, in the US, it is a very expensive treatment. But that does not make it any less valid. I would argue that the person who believed that it was a scam would also believe that science already has a cure for cancer and that the government/aliens are observing their behavior. Chemotherapy is a valid and important aspect of most cancer care plans.

Both.  There's certain times it helps.  I my doc said id live a year with it and 3 months without it id say no thanks.  Just fill me up with morphine till I'm swimming in it and wait impatiently to be absent from the body and be present with the LORD.

Well, I guess you could argue that because chemo is a poison and you are actively killing your body in hopes to kill the cancer before it kills you, its immoral. And, I suppose if you assume the patient doesn't fully understand how chemo works when agreeing to it, it could also be construed as being immoral. So I guess if the patient dies and you do some mental gymnastics to reach the conclusion, its possible to see it as murder.

But obviously, chemo is the most effective tool at fighting cancer that we have at the moment. Perhaps in the future, people will look back with the same disgust we have when we think about blood-letting as a valid medical treatment, but its honestly the best we can do with the knowledge we have.

It's not a scam, but it's not the best treatment out there. It has a lower success rate than you'd expect from something so strongly recommended and you'd be better off changing your diet or lifestyle than getting chemo. I don't understand why it's the first and only thing that's suggested by doctors.

It's a valid treatment and it does work. Of course, just like any drug or treatment, it doesn't work for everybody but that doesn't make it a scam or anything.

Healthcare isn't free in Canada anyways. We pay for everything indirectly through our taxes and not all services are covered, like dental care for example.

My brother was on chemo for several years. It worked very well for twice - just started the therapy and the tumors already reacted. The third time he wasn't that lucky anymore and the therapy didn't work at all. He though survived even though they're completely lacking of any explanation so far.

Its a form of treatment. Its not guaranteed to work for everyone, its created to give it a try.

All we have to do is wait for more forms of treatments.

Don't take this the wrong way, don't take it as a scam until you undergo the process. Just look at the survivor up there.

The whole NHS is free in britain for its residents,  doesn't  make it a scam. A lot of people get better after chemo, doctors who get cancer themselves have it, take a look into the science behind how it works. No, it is  definitely  not a scam.

It's a valid treatment and has saved many people.  Problem is, it kind of kills everything, not just cancer cells and really hard to target so it will make the person suffer from multiple side effects but can still safe your life.  Just might be hell going through it, but in return you have the chance of surviving!

Well first, your healthcare isn't "free". Secondly, I think in a hundred years or so we will look at chemotherapy the same way you'd look at bloodletting today. Barbaric and mostly ineffective.

That being said, it's the best we have right now.

My mom was in her last stages, and never took chemo and cured herself through changing her diet and juicing. So I'm undecided.

Even if there is a 100% cure rate treatment, if it can't be patented, it won't be used by mainstream medicine.

It's not the best treatment but it is A Treatment. I think naturopathic remedies are better and more non-invasive but they don't always work.

It is both a scam and a treatment, the scam is that it is so costly. Chemotherapy should not be so expensive, but if you knew the chemistry and biology you would understand how it works.

Well, I honestly have no experience so I can't really provide an educated opinion. I would really like to think it's a valid method of treatment, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it weren't as effective as I thought and was a money-making scam.
