I went with my dad a few times and a couple of boyfriends growing up. I always got bored. But I'll run my mouth while I'm out there and talk people's heads off.

You're very kind. Now that I'm old I'm pretty clear on things I like and don't like. Almost never do the things move from one column to the other. I'm not close-minded, just after enough years I have clarity. Anyway, where I was going with this is that fishing is one of the few things I WANT to move from the "dislike" column to the "like" column and it just never happens.

I used to love it. I don't like fish but my family does, so when I was 12 my uncle made me a fishing kit as an Easter present and fixed my grandpa's old fishing rod and took me out fishing regularly. It was so much fun and I really enjoyed the preparation, the peace, the good time I just had being outside and hang with him, my cousin and other people. We even went on fishing trips during summer breaks.

But as my younger cousin got older, he preferred taking his guy friends along instead of me and having been a very introverted teenager, I was too anxious and insecure to pursue the hobby on my own. I still went a few more times with my uncle, but eventually retired from it when I was 16.

I love it. I started fishing when I was 2. I do TONS of fishing every year and I even fished for just about 200 straight days one year. Not just for a couple hours each day either, but 8 to as much as 18 hours sometimes. It's a passion. I find it relaxing and I also enjoy the challenge.

What kind of fishing do you like? 🙂

Yes it's very popular here. Mostly I do lure fishing in the summer off the rocks and surf beaches with friends but we also get the heavy gear out at times for conger, rays, huss, smooth hounds etc

I love going salmon fishing on Lake Ontario and once you get 28 or 30 miles out in the lake you can't see the shore in any direction. That's where it's great salmon fishing for King Salmon otherwise know as Chinook Salmon. You can easily catch salmon ranging from 15lbs. To 28lbs. It's not quite as good as the saltwater Salmon but still very good. The last time we went out we ended up with 80lbs. Of fillets, some which I cured and smoked.

Hopefully you're keeping smaller ones. Most chinooks out of Lake Ontario start to get pretty contaminated over about 16inches. Have a look at the consumption guide below.

      www.ontario.ca/page/guide-eating-ontario-fish

Personally, I try to not eat fish listed under 16 meals per month to stay on the safer side of things. Mostly, the only fish I keep for eating are perch, but I do have a friend who I get rainbow trout fillets from sometimes, but those come from the very clean waters on the north shore of Manitoulin Island. I do love chinook fishing though, but only during the spawn from shore. I like casting for them and float fishing for them. πŸ™‚

@Adventurer23 I know all about the contamination which is why we never keep the belly meat which is where 99% of the contamination is located.

I scuba dived at tobermory for years the only reason the waters there are so clear is not due to lack of contamination but because the water is so cold that algae cannot form.

@liamsawyer There are not only contaminants in the fattier belly meat, but also the dark flesh along the lateral line as well. Particularly in salmonids (salmon and trout) where contaminants accumulate along the lateral line more than most other fish species. That dark flesh also negatively affects the flavour of the meat when cooked or smoked without prior removal.

Also, I never mentioned "clear water" was an indicator of lack of contaminants. However, one of the reasons why the North Channel - particularly the more eastern portion of it - is so clean is because of a few reasons. Firstly, it receives water flow directly from Lake Superior, which is one of the cleanest of the Great Lakes, largely due to the fact that there isn't as much of a human population around it as the other Great Lakes. Also, the North Channel is very sparsely populated, so there is VERY little industrial outflow, agriculture, or runoff from roads and developed land, etc. in that area, which is what contributes to most contamination. Additionally, Manitoulin Island acts as a barrier that blocks out most of the water from the main lake of Lake Huron, so much of the clean water that resides there, stays there. But also, the geology of that area seems to be very low in naturally occurring contaminants like mercury and other heavy metals, which is a contributing factor too. If you look at the guide, the "NC2" area of the North Channel is one of the cleanest waters in the entire province for species like Rainbow Trout, Walleye, Northern Pike, Cisco and even Lake Trout. Particularly for their size. They are clean, not because that area has "clear water", but because of the factors I mentioned. Cheers and tight lines.
