It's like driving a stick shift for the first time. Or scoring a touchdown. Or learning how to operate heavy machinery. Nothing quite like downing a tree and having a reason to yell 'Timber!'

Environmentalists need not be concerned. This tree needed to be cleared for other projects.

I live in the country and my dad heated with wood.
We had access to a large woods plus my dad had a lot of trees on his property.
Many were really old and near the end of their lives, so rather than risk them falling on the house we would take them down, plus some blew over in storms so we would cut them up. After an ice storm there was plenty of wood available for the taking.
We had chain saws from 16" for trimming them up, an 18" did most of the cutting and I had a 22" for larger trees.
For a while I lived in a really old farmhouse, and the front room/kitchen area I put in a free-standing wood stove. It kept me very toasty on those below zero days.
As far as splitting went depending on what we were splitting elm was the worst, we had wedges, a maul, a splitting maul it had a sledge hammer head on 1 side and a wedge on the other.
A lot of it 1 or 2 good hits with the wedge end and it would split just fine.
I also had a double-sided axe that I would use when it was cold out.
It worked great on maple and oak.
The worst part was the constant bending over to set the wood back up on the block you were using.
Many years later pops got a gas powered splitter and between the 2 of us we could split a lot of wood in a day.
He ran the controls, I put the wood down to be split and picked up the split pieces.
The head would turn 90 degrees so you didn't have to lift up the really big pieces.
In my lake house I had a pellet stove.
It did a great job heating the house until the temp got into the 20s then the furnace would run as well.
It was a nice constant heat.
I would go through about 2 to 2.5 tons of pellets a season.

Neighbor. Same thing. I don’t think people realize trees fall all the time on their own. The tree line is lined with downed trees.

All those logs were for a wood stove in a barn.

I just finished tearing up an oak branch a few weeks ago. Heavy, burned a long time, smelled good. It took out one of our peach trees.

I believe I used a 20” bar. Stihl makes solid stuff.

Not me personally but my folks have had people come do it when a 40ft tree fell during a really crazy storm.

That’s what I did last time. Wind storm ripped off a huge branch off about a 60ft oak tree and snapped a 40ft cedar tree in half. Burned all of it.

Yes, i heated with wood for 3 years. I used to get 7 or 8 cords year. I would take my trailer to some remote place and mostly cut up trees that had fallen down already but I did cut some down. I did all the work myself.

As a trained arborist, I've certainly spent time up in the canopies of trees, as well as removing them to ground level. I've split tons of wood because my parents heat with it.

Split wood, yes. I haven't chopped down any proper trees, neither with a chainsaw nor with an ax. But I've used an ax on some small trees, if I just needed one down for whatever reason.

I've heard it's hard and draining job. But never tried by myself. One more element to my list of things, I want to do :D

instead of going to a gym i believe in splitting wood by hand. great workout, great release if your angry, whole body workout for sure and at the same time your getting free heat for your house. makes perfect sense

Yep! I used to chop wood all the time at my old house in Oregon. We had to. Wouldn't have survived without it.
