Have you ever had a Christmas TREE ACCIDENT?

We often hear of accidents involving Christmas trees. They fall over, ornaments fall off, and sometimes that catch fire.

Here's an interesting incident that happened a few years ago, possibly prophetic, recounted by Prince Harry...

The Duchess of Sussex [Meghan Markle] bought a sentimental gift for Prince Harry for their first Christmas at their home in America in 2020. After exchanging gifts on Christmas Eve – as is tradition for the royals – Prince Harry explained in his book Spare: "One present was a little Christmas ornament of... the Queen! I roared. What the—? Meg had spotted it in a local store and thought I might like it. I held it to the light. It was Granny’s face to a T.

"I hung it on an eye-level branch. It made me happy to see her there. It made Meg and me smile."

He continued that their son Prince Archie, then 19 months old, sadly suffered an accident with the tree. "But then Archie, playing around the tree, jostled the stand, shook the tree, and Granny fell. I heard a smash and turned. Pieces lay all over the floor.

"I grabbed a dustpan and swept up the pieces, all the while thinking: This is weird."

Some time in the late 1980s, I moved into a really nice apartment. The living room had a tall ceiling and there was a mirrored alcove at one end that was perfect for a tree.

Before that, I had always lived in places that could only accommodate a 6' high tree. Over the years, I had accumulated a lot of unique ornaments.

So I bought a gorgeous 8' tree and decorated the crap out of it. It was magnificent.

I had my family over one night for dinner so that I could show off my apartment with the tree and my Christmas decorations.

We were sitting in the living room later and, to everyone's horror, the tree suddenly tipped over. Water from the stand spilled onto the carpet and some ornaments smashed.

I managed to stand the tree back up, but it was no longer a work of perfection. The incident sure put a damper on what had been a lovely evening.

The next day, I moved it, cleaned and vacuumed, and rented a shampooer to clean the carpet. I put the tree back in place and rearranged the ornaments. What a nightmare hassle.

The problem, I realized, was that the stand was sitting on a padded carpet that allowed it to sag, even though I thought I had the weight evenly distributed.

I had that apartment for a few more years and had big trees for Christmas, but no others ever tipped over. My family never forgot that incident, though.

One time I took the old Christmas tree out to the garden to get rid of it. That means burn it. So I used a lighter to burn the tree. It blew up in my face. It didn't just burn, it practically exploded as soon as I touched it with the lighter. I had to jump back. I was lucky I didn't get seriously burned. I thought it would take a while to get it started. I thought it might take some kindling.

Then I understood why there are so many house fires around Christmas. Or at least there used to be when most people had real trees. It takes almost nothing to get it started.

Not an accident, per se, but it was quite a spectacle. In the first week of January, I heard something moving inside the Christmas tree. I could see the branches move as it scuttled around inside but I couldn’t see exactly what it was. I knew I had to get the tree out of the house immediately since it was now some kind of wildlife sanctuary. Problem was, I couldn’t just pick up the tree and risk being bitten by whatever was in it. I found a thin rope in the garage and then, there I was in my living room, wrangling up the tree like it was the Wild West. I lasso’d the tree, and after a few forceful heaves, I hoisted it out the front door. I’m sure the neighbors were concerned about my mental health. It was an absurd situation. I call it “The Christmas Tree Rodeo of 2022.”

Years ago, we'd never had an issue before, but this year there was something going on with how we put our tree up because that year we got the tree up and decorated and then a few days later the whole thing started to fall over, my 8 year old daughter caught it as she was walking by. A few days later the tree fell again. It fell several times that year. Never did figure out what was making it fall over.

For the first time I have an organic tree, and as a Health and Safety guru I was careful to site it away from direct heat sources such as radiators. It's only three feet tall so in the unlikely event of it toppling I wouldn't expect any fatalities.

We used to have a dog. She tore into the wrapped presents but just the wrapping, and chewed up the cord that connected to the angel we put on the tree. My mom went to plug it up because she didn’t notice and was shocked by the electricity outlet.

I THINK there was one year where the tree almost fell over. We just had to secure the screws better in the tree stand and everything was alright. I think there was another year where I started to lose my balance and almost fell on the tree.

Yes, when the cat nearly toppled it over. This was the younger cat who is very mischievous. If I wasn’t there and grabbed it, it would have crashed to the floor. Real tree, too.

Yes before I stopped celebrating that pagan holiday, my dad and I were getting a tree head on collision, totalled out van and 4 bruised ribs later. Putting up a dead tree in your home is not that worth it.
