What tips would you give to someone who wants to try keeping some plants for the first time?

With indoor plants the main thing is to pick plants to match the light levels in the room. A spider plant for example with turn brown if given too much light so is best kept off the windowsill. While Tradescantia are virtually indestructible and will thrive almost anywhere.

Start with something that won’t die easy if you’ve never cared for plants before, like a cactus.

They aren’t that easy, most people overwater them or never give enough light and the cactus don’t last long. They are intermediate level, not beginner.

Start with something easy, like a Pothos plant or English ivy. They require a little sun, thrive in basic potting soil but need good drainage (water comes out bottom of pots holes), don’t grow very fast, and as long as it’s not very hot or cold do well at room temp. Then if you do good with that work your way to fancier plants; always do research online for what plant you want before buying!

Like others mentioned you need to match your light exposure to the plants requirements. Each plant has a tag on it that shows what light exposure is needed (full sun, part sun, shade). Sometimes smaller plants you can buy special plant grow lights to make up if you don’t have enough light.

Temperature is also a factor, if you have a cool and dry room with low light tropical plants won’t do well. Some may need daily water misting with a spray bottle to keep humidity up.

Size is also a factor, some tropical plants sold are really trees or shrubs and will reach your ceiling over time and require a plant room or greenhouse!
