I am no stranger to planting things, but I've never done a garden by myself --- my dad would always help me as a kid, so I'm excited to try it this year. I'm growing squash, cucumber, and some medicinal herbs.

I am no stranger to planting things, but I've never done a garden by myself --- my dad would always help me as a kid, so I'm excited to try it this year. I'm growing squash, cucumber, and some medicinal herbs.

I've done it casually off and on for years. I started back again about 5-6 years ago. I started a very small garden in the ground, and more and more often I'm growing in containers.
Currently in the ground I have cherry tomatoes, regular tomatoes, green beans, and zucchini. There was supposed to be more, but I start from seed and this year's seeds didn't produce enough to do everything I wanted.
In containers I have cherry tomatoes, green peppers, hot peppers and radishes. I use regular pots, but also the big buckets for drywall compound. I can get an almost unlimited supply of those. I also use the large size #10 cans and the large coffee containers for radishes and petite carrots. They are plenty big enough for small root crops and some herbs.
I really wanted to start horseradish this year but the stores run out fast. I've been wanting to start strawberries for a few years now but haven't done it yet because they need well drained soil and my soil is clay. I need to prepare an area with a bunch of sand and compost. They spread quickly, so 1-2 plants turn into a bunch of plants in just 1-2 years.
I've gotten so I really like the containers. I think I like them better than growing in the ground. Two years ago I bought two pots of peppers inside for the winter to see if they'd grow. They barely survived because I keep it pretty cool inside. They only had a couple of very small leaves when I put them back outside in the spring. Once they got back in the sun they sprang back and were producing fruit very early in the spring.
Some house plants are easy to keep alive. I've had a very hard time keeping others alive. Like I've never been able to keep African Violets alive. I have at least one house plant that is over 40 years old. I have 3-4 more that are around 30 years old. I've had a lot more plants that kicked the bucket.
The trick with succulents is to use very well drained soil and don't over water them. They hate too much water.
I actually like gardening. lol My mom always did tons of gardening when I was at home and I finally got into it when I was in my late 20s. Sadly, due to a lack of space and direct sunlight I have a fairly modest gardening area, but I grow different kinds of flowers and hostas, and I also grow tomatoes (in large pots), kale and different herbs. Again, I wish I had more space to grow stuff because I would have a huge garden to grow all kinds of veggies and fruits, as well as tons of native flowers for pollinating insects and birds. It's my lifelong dream to do homesteading, so hopefully one day! 😊
Oh, and I grow chili peppers too.
YES!!! I absolutely love gardening! We have grown many different things, potatoes, tomatoes, Bell peppers, jalapenos, okra, squash, cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe, lettuce, and strawberries!
They're so much fun to grow, very tasty to eat too! Nothing really beats a homemade fresh garden salad, it's tasty and very nutritious. :)
I kind of wish more people were into gardening, growing your own crop is something very special. :)
That’s awesome
I finally have the space and location for it, so yes!
I've started growing strawberries, herbs, lettuce, kale, squash, tomatoes, and flowers (for them pollinators).
It's going well and I've really been enjoying it.
I should get my first harvest of tomatoes soon, and I've already harvest herbs for garden fresh teas.

My family are really good at it. I am the bad one and used to run away from farm work.
I think I know how I just don’t want to.
my hubby grows a garden of peppers, sweet snaps, salad greens, pumpkins, watermelon, fig tree, kale, basil, tomatoes, etc… we use a lot of our garden veggies over the summer. but we will be gone for over a month… so we won’t know what the garden conditions would be when we come home.
The UK is very much a nation of gardeners.
i go through fits and starts with gardening but do like how it is over the seasons,
I have a veggie plot, a bit of a summer meadow area.
then an area of various plants which are low maintenance lol.
i did a lot of gardening with my previous house and a lot of cultivation early on to get everything just right.
next big garden project is to set up a mid layer decking area and replace the summer house.
Do you have an alottment (sp)?
@Sixgunsound I did have when lived in Birmingham. Now I’ve enough land to just have it inside the garden

I have several species of peppers, onions, tomatoes, raspberries (which just started producing, finally) blueberries and beans growing at the moment.
We need to bring back the tradition of victory gardens. If we are going to emerge victorious over the scumbag elites trying to kill off the American middle class we need to be even the slightest bit more self sufficient, and be developing those skills. Most people are unlikely to become self sufficient with the tiny fragmented amounts of land each person has if they have any at all, but with the mass die off in the next few years opportunities should be opening up for people who spent that time developing skills.
My peppers aren't doing to well this year , to cold at night here I think. Got a bumper crop of strawberries and aside from some blossom end rot (a few tumms fixed that) my tomatoes and squash are doing great.
@Slartybartfast my strawberries committed mass suicide…
To much nitrogen?
@Slartybartfast I don’t actually know. I was lazy this year and got plants that were already started. I put them in containers that had miracle grow fruit and vegetable mix but apparently didn’t read the fine print closely enough. I also tried putting them in stackable containers so the roots might have gotten over temperature.
Yes- it's actually something I've been looking into for a while, and with rising food prices, it's a better idea than ever. We spend WAY too much excellent cropland growing a European weed that can't survive here without extra water (at a time when much of the country is plagued by DROUGHT, no less!) for no reason other than conspicuous consumption.
Meanwhile, you can eat every last part of a dandelion...
I've tried the tea and coffee substitutes; they’re a bit of an acquired taste but functional
My wife and I garden. We have 16 fruit trees, seven of which are citrus. We grow herbs, veggies and strawberries in raised beds and containers, and blackberries climbing up our deer fence. We grow many from (organic) seed.
It's a lot of work, but fresh fruit and veggies taste wonderful and they aren't treated with poisons. You know where they came from.
It's more important than ever these days to invest in food security.
What did you do for your strawberries? I tried doing mine in freestanding containers, but the raised bed thing work better? Allegedly they can tolerate both settings, but my experience disagrees…
@Sixgunsound. We have some in pots and even in one of those multi-level pots on our porch. But this year, we also put some in grow bags and set them on gopher wire in our raised bed with a cylinder around them to keep critters like voles, ground squirrels, and even birds out. We have to get creative to keep critters away from certain things.
Yeah my stacked container got knocked over once by a squirrel, and I am on the city edge of the suburbs so discharging a.22 isn’t going to work I hit it with a BB gun and it just laughed it off. Poison might get eaten by neighborhood cats so that’s out.
@Sixgunsound. Yeah, we don't use poisons ever.
Yes, I built a squarefoot garden that consistedof two separate boxes. They sere about six by three or four feet each. So not quite square but that's ok.
I grew tomatoes, watermelons, herbs, peppers, okras, strawberries. All sorts of foods. I also had marigolds and asters for pest repellent and pollinator attraction.
I miss my garden since I moved countries. I am am mores ettled now so I will likely get some planters going soon.
I wouldn't mind growing some herbs so I wouldn't waste money buying the essentials every other day but that would mean having a small garden in the corner so it doesn't disturb anyone. I've seen people in the past have indoor gardens, they can look and grow pretty well if you know what you're doing.
Yep love gardening! I like growing lots of different plants. Right now have zucchini, tomatoes, pumpkin, watermelon, bell peppers, jalapeños, carolina reapers, green beans, onions, and lots of herbs too
When you’re Carolina reapers come in can you post pics?
@Sixgunsound I grew them last year too. Maybe I can find a pic
https://ibb.co/LSwJ9jT
Only pic I could find of them. No pics of the plants themselves but we had two huge pepper plants. Ended up with 50-100 peppers
Nice! My brother-in-law is a hotel chef and said he definitely has plans for them but won’t tell me what they are😥 Now I’m worried
@Sixgunsound haha yeah my husband did the same thing. Cooked with them and made his friends try them. One ended up in the shower crying for 30 mintues cause of being so spicy
There’s more active ingredient in a Carolina reaper pepper then there is in a can of law enforcement
grade pepper spray.
Yes every summer I help my mom and sister in the garden
I quite like getting a bit muddy pulling up the weeds digging
Over the borders and planting new plants for the summer
Me and my sister are the same. We like gardening.
I have a garden now. I have gotten potatoes, squash, eggplant, tomatoes, watermelon, and hot peppers from it.
I feel like that might be something I would do down the line since it's a useful skill to have and all.
My mom back at home gardens, she likes doing it and it makes me happy to see her enjoy doing it.
I have lot of fruit trees in my garden, but I hire a professional to trim and to spray them. I maintain tomatoes, beans, strawberries, gooseberries and grapes.
I love it but would have killed off a small rain forest if I didn't have a small mountain of books on the subject. I have so may potted plants I think I need to get an automatic watering system.
I'm doing a bit of gardening this season. The three sisters, corn, beans and squash.
I'm doing it to teach my kids where food comes from and how to provide it for themselves if needed.
What kind of medical herbs?
I've found that an aero garden is a good way to speed up that tiresome waiting phase after germination.
I'm thinking I should grow some chamomile for tea.
Wish I had a greenhouse. Perhaps down the road some time.
Why would I do a silly thing like that? 😉
I've got lots of friends, you'll have to do better than that. 😜
I have a garden this year. The bunnies seem to like it.
i imagine myself wearinh farmer's clothes meaning long sleeve and long pants and a big hat plus sunblock so the preparation is a lot. so maybe someday if i have time
nah, too time consuming and tending to keep them surviving and thriving and I can barely do that for myself at times. Id rather just get a cat.
I have corm, peppers, cherry, grape and slicing tomato's, peas, beans, cucumbers, One grape vine and an orange, apple peach, keykime, and lemon each.
Absolutely! Right I just have a couple plum trees. In the future I want to grow some mushrooms and cacti too.
Yes, I grow edible crops in my backyard. It is a fun pastime.
Yes. I would try it for making my own vegetables. <3
I'm in vigorous process. However - the things I plan often don't grow well, and other things (edible, though) pop up instead :D
I love gardening. Just me, my thoughts, and physical that literally bears fruit.
Yeah , loads of really good ideas for propagation of fruits and vegetables, the health benefits are awesome, nothing better than fresh organic food.
Remember, in time of crisis vegans are the closest thing to free range grass fed organic🤣
Plenty of them eat garbage too, but in general vegans are healthier than omnivores. Just compare the skin of a 50 year old vegan and and a 50 year old carnivore. Meat ages you. That's why Asians look young into late adulthood. Many don't eat much meat.
Ya I do it all the time
got a few pumpkins growing rn
Got my first good pumpkins last year, the unripe dark green ones made really cool looking jack-o'-lanterns.
i need fresh basil and i am willing to beat up the ground until it gives me some
Yes I’m currently growing cucumbers avocados and carrots
Absolutely, and your dad loves you very much !
Yeap. I grow herbs and a shit ton of potatoes
Nice! I know there are so many ways to grow potatoes. What method do you use?
I was in 4H, I hated it, my Dad loves it , I was a slave to yard and garden work
I love my garden, it's become my #1 way to relax.
I want to try gardening soon.
Yes, its nice to grow our own vegetables.
Yes indeed.
I have but I don't know if I would do it again
Yeah but for now i only have a little cactus
I’ve done quite a bit of gardening actually.
I would try it, but I currently do it underwater
I've done it multiple times and I love it!
Of course I have tried gardening.
ya i love growing my own veggies every summer
I have tried it, I didn't like it.
I love gardening it's relaxing and fun
Yep.
Have fun
