Have you ever danced around a May Pole?

As you know, today is May Day. May day eve is of course the opposite of Halloween so I do hope you all protected yourself from wandering spirits last night.

One traditional still held in parts of the UK and Europe is dancing around a May Pole. Now I've never done it and I feel left out. The idea of skipping around a big pole weaving in and out with a ribbon sounds fun.

So have you ever danced around a May Pole? Did your school have one? Was it on the village green?

The maypole dance would be forbidden in the U. S if people understood the relation to 1) sex and fertility and 2) communism. Both are celebrated on May 1 and both are completely misunderstood and - frequently as a result- feared in this country.

Perhaps the single thing that helped the tycoons from the gilded age hold onto all of their wealth was by stirring up anti-communist sentiment. Most Euopean countries managed to gain an understanding and as a result many benefits from communism but the conservatives were so rabidly anti-communist- since they never wanted to part with a dime or pay workers a fair wage- they managed to get the entire population to fear and hate an idea that they never even understood.

Did so way back in the early 1960s while in grade school. They don't do it so much anymore.

years ago every high school and college had a girls Apollonian dance troupe -- Simmons (a rather exclusive Yankee college) is one of very few that still has one

Beltane is the pagan day of Peace and is usually celebrated on May 1. It is one of few pagan holidays which was not adopted by Christians.

I grew up in Baden-Wuerttemberg and Maypole is still tradition there. I was a presentable tall blonde girl in kindergarten and was abused few times to participate in it.

I did when I was still a single digit in age. I remember screwing it up. How can I have two left feet going around a Maypole? After while the teacher made it optional and those that wanted to do it could. All the girls stayed and the boys went. The girls enjoyed it.
