How many here drive real cars?

Question

As I'm cruzing down the road and I see all the horrible ev cars. I always think to myself i would love to run these people off the rd driving these gawd ugly tesla and other dumb ev vehicles. This question is for the older members that may agree with me. Who thinks this?

I drive a real car, and have no intention of getting an electric vehicle. At least not anytime soon.

I know some people swear by them, but unless you live in a city, and only drive them in the city, they're just not as practical. The infrastructure just isn't there, yet, in all areas of the country, and having to plan your road trips around your charging stops just seems likeva hassle, to me.

Add the fact that it literally takes 60 seconds to fuel up a gas powered vehicle, vs 20-60 minutes for an electric, and no thank you. I could be 20-60 minutes closer to my destination, times however many of those stops are necessary. Over a long trip, those stops can add several extra hours of wasted time that could be spent on the road.

I'll also never understand why people think they're "greener" either. Simply manufacturing the batteries, and excavating the materials, is terrible for the environment, and most of the batteries will wear out before the vehicles, necessitating replacement with another envirinmentally devestating battery.

They're also much, much more dangerous in the event of an accident, as the batteries are much more difficult to extinguish in the event of a fire, and give off more harmful chemicals while they're burning.

Their resale value is lower, due to the aforementioned battery life, as most people won't buy a used vehicle if there's the possibility they'll need to spend $15k on a new battery in the next couple years.

Plus, the electricity used to charge tgem is, by and large, still produced by fossil fuels, anyway.

The technology just isn't there yet, imho, because of all of the shortfalls associated with it.

I don't think the battery cars are as good for the environment as advertised. I saw a German documentary that showed when they mind the metals to make the batteries, the dust gets out and causes the locals cancer and wrecks the crops.

I think you're an idiot. EV's are a great concept. The main drawbacks are the infrastructure isn't there to support them at this moment and charging (refueling) Li Ion batteries is too slow. Also Li Ion batteries are a "dirty" technology, and not the long term solution. But things like silicon based solid state batteries may solve those problems and be lighter, cheaper, plus have higher energy densities.

Electric drive outperforms fossil fuel engines all day every day. 100% torque available from 0 RPM. No engine cooling system. No exhaust system. No intake system. No liquid fuel delivery system. No engine oil. No spark plugs. No balance shafts. No timing chain or belt. No drive shafts. No differentials. Simplified or no transmission. Electric motors are inherently balanced and last forever with zero maintenance.

Electric drive eliminates a huge number of potential failure points and maintenance parts. They are an inherently more reliable design. Energy storage and distribution in a clean solution is the last hurdle to making it feasible for everyone.

But I do agree that until those problems are solved, full electric does not make sense for everyone. That doesn't mean we stop electric development altogether. It means we get there over time. Like every new technology change.

I have a 50's Willy's pickup and a 65 Dodge A 100 van. 21st century cars are junk right off the assembly line. They should have a big conveyer belt a the end of the line that dumps right into the back of a huge roll off bin on a truck. Take them all to the junk yards around town and just dump them. This goes for gas, hybrid or electric. They're all garbage. In fact let's take it a step further and have a cop car parked in front of the headquarters building's front door. When the CEO and share holders show up they could just open the door on the cop car instead of the office building. That way they could just sit down in the back seat and be taken right to jail to await trial.
