1 moMy autistic child beats everyone but me. I played everyday in high school. Learning to put you in checkmate or to avoid it in 4 moves or less was like a stepping stone about 30 of us all learned pretty fast. It was funny because our history teacher had us for about 2 hours and would let us take 29 minutes break to do this. I mean I still learned evil white men raped the aztecs for about 300 years before the first British set foot in America... but for some reason I just give more fucks about kicking your ass in chess.

I have, and my crowning glory as a teenager I came second in my club chess championship. It was a boxing club lol.
I met Grand masters when I was 7 as they were staying at the same hotel in Benidorm Spain when my family took our first international trip. UK and Swedish grand masters played with us as we all had some interest at that time.
Haven't played for years/decades though.

1 moWhen I used to join chess tournaments, I'd often win all the way to championships.
Those few and only times I was beaten in the finals were in the hands of my brothers who I've never beaten in competitions.
At least, I'm glad to say that I've never been beaten by anyone outside of my family.
However, I've beaten both of my brothers on separate occasions at home even though I think they intentionally threw the games to make me feel good.
Yet, 'til this day, none of us have ever won a game against dad.

What's MHO?
I’m generally good enough to beat someone the first time we play together and then I’ll lose every time after that. I don’t really have the patience for chess most of the time so I’ll make questionable moves just for fun that lead to me losing lol

I have dabbled in chess from time to time. While I wouldn't call myself a chess expert, I do enjoy the strategic thinking it requires. It's a fascinating game that, much like art, demands creativity and patience. While I wouldn't say I'm particularly skilled, I certainly appreciate the mental challenge it offers. 😊

I went visiting someone and they had an expensive chess set on a table.
I thought it was just like an ornament, because I didn't think they played chess.
I have played but not seriously but I remembered vaguely some moves from a book I looked at when I was a child.
I jokingly asked I'll have you a game, and we started playing standing up.
The first move of my opponent was a strange move, and I naturally went on the attack.
Obviously they knew what they were doing, and I had them in checkmate in 4 or 5 moves.
One of my other hosts asked having heard my request, why we weren't playing chess, and my opponent answered that I'd won.
The game only lasted 2 minutes at the most, my games usually with bad opponents can last hours.

1 moI played chess a long time ago , it interested me because of the strategy aspect but became more about memorizing “plays” and then I found that not many people I was around either knew how to play or wanted to so I fell away from it.
To say I was any more than average at it would likely be a lie , but it want about being good it was just interesting for a bit.10 ReplyI have played chess.
I've never found a willing opponent who would play on a regular enough basis for me to actually learn the game, though.
When I was a kid, I recall my dad and his dad playing for hours at a time.
I have Dad's set, but it sits unused.10 Reply@thegreenyogi I keep my chess board always set up in the Solarium, with comfortable chairs but do not have a clock. Have not played in some time and should play against myself. I have worked on several 'openings' and have tried to set up an offence, or perhaps it is a defense, but have not tried it in a game.
10 ReplyYeah to both. I used to play competitively (nerd alert). But nowadays if I'm sitting with someone unpleasant I just try to get through the game a little quicker (even if it means losing).
10 ReplyNo, generally I am not good, but I do chess puzzles everyday. When I play machines a lot, I do get better, but, no, I don't have the skills of a good player; certainly below Master.

1 moI'm decent. I always wanted to learn some openings and get ranked but it seems like learning enough for it to be a battle of the witts again would take a long time.

1 moYes I have - I’ve only played maybe 50 times and have won and lost, but I definitely wouldn’t say I’m good against someone who really knows what they’re doing.

1 moI've played it. I'm horrible.
To be good at chess, you have to be thinking ahead by multiple moves, and I don't have the attention span for that.

1 moYes. Fair, at best. My oldest grandson was just in his first chess tournament and actually won one of his four rounds. Apparently, this doesn't happen often for the "first timers", so we'll take that.250 batting average as a win.

One of my grandsons just won 2 of 5 matches in his first competition. He's the patient one in the family.
1 moYes they say I was once but I don't know if that is true, I dont know now, long time ago, probably not so good

1 moI played chess a lot when I was younger, haven't played much recently. I'm an okay player, not good enough to ever enter a tournament.
10 ReplyI have. I've only played with one, the friend who taught me how. We played 30 plus times and I finally beat him the last time we played. That was around 95-96.

1 moI do love playing chess but I have an embarrassing chess rating of 400 elo.
13 Reply- 1 mo
@Apulu_backagain Why would that be embarassing? A lot of players are rated 400.
- 1 mo
@AngryCarl2 Because I'm surrounded by really good players, one of my cousins is around 1200 and he was district level chess player, my dad who just plays like once a year is 1000 above and other friend of mine is around 1500.

@Apulu_backagain Yes I suppose that could be demotivating.

1 moI've played on and off since my early 20s. I'm a pretty average amateur player, that's to say I'm not nearly as good as a regular club player would be.
10 ReplyYes, and I suck at it. I went to highschool (a few years above) with a kid who was really good at chess. He once beat two people in our chess club at the same time while blindfolded.
