Backpacking (multi day trips) are more fun and easier with 2-4 people. You can spread out stuff like cooking gear and the tent so everyone is carrying less weight. And you have someone to share the experience with.
But, I've been backpacking and climbing solo for years because I simply can't find anyone who wants to do stuff like that. My friends all quit long ago. Casual friends can't join in because you need probably $1,000 in gear just to get out on the trail. Boots, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, backpack, rain gear, some specialized clothing. I can cover someone with some equipment. I have 3 tents, 3 sleeping bags / sleep systems, 3 backpacks, compass, maps, bear keg, bear spray, 2 cooking systems and eating utensils, medical supplies, water filtration system, etc.
If you forced me to choose one or the other, I'd say I prefer going hiking with a singular friend...
Although it's hard finding the right sort of person who you can ebb and flow with for hikes. You need to be at the same fitness levels, same temperament, and enjoy nature in the same way.
Good hiking partners are rare.
The reality of it is I'd prefer to go alone than go hiking with the wrong person.
I don't think it is wise to go alone. Many have disappeared while hiking (love sick Bigfoot?) or get injured or lost. Always take a GPS locator so they can find you. And if you tumble down a hill and break both legs, don't come running to me.
Oh, it's always more fun with a friend! And then there's also someone to help carry all the stuff I overpacked! 😊

Alone or with a friend depending on context. If it is a short hike in a familiar location, I would rather be alone. However, if it's a long trip in an unknown place, I would want the company of a friend or two with me. Going alone has its risks -I get lost about half of the time- but it also has the greatest value. You can step away from your life and the image everyone from that life has of you. Even your friends have expectations- small, harmless assumptions that bear an accumulating weight you can shed in the presence of nature and solitude.
I always went hiking and backpacking with small groups of friends. It's a lot more fun. Plus, if anything should happen, like a twisted ankle or rattle snake bite, there are people to help and/or go for help. Nothing bad ever happened on any of my trips, though.
I have my own hiking trail so I usually go by myself daily. I just listen to music and I take pictures of scenery sometimes. In the summer I go on other public trails. I hike with my son occasionally, or anyone else that wants to go.
depends on my mood... I could go with either and all, at different times
they all sound good to me... they're just good in different ways
Usually wouldn't recommend hiking two places solely without GPS sign al proper equipment. Be prepared 100% you say something happens by yourself
I don't mind going with groups or a friend. But I prefer nude solo hiking at my own pace.
I'd hike alone, or with a friend, but not a group.
A very special friend would be most welcome.
A friend or two is ideal most of the time. There are times to escape from literally everyone though.
A friend or a small group of friends. Having some company is nice but wouldn't want to have a large group or strangers.
Everything is better with company.
Both. I'm pretty comfortable by myself in the woods. I've done a lot of outback camping and such. Nowadays I take my son, wether he likes it or not! Lol

Hiking with 2-4 people is perfect. Alone is dangerous and a large group is annoying.
A friend. I don’t like crowds and rather not be alone.
I prefer hiking and camping solo to be honest. I love the solitude. Just myself and nature.
I don't like hiking but if i ever want to try it than i prefer with friends, cause hiking alone is dangerous..
