I dont' think the horror of this kind of thing is as glaring to us up until it happens to someone we know. The real horror is brought home to us in glaring detail when you see the broken, destroyed body either in a hospital emergency room or worse yet in a coffin at the funeral home.
As some of you already know, (Coach and Sage2021) I recently "lost" a very young lady friend (she just turned 21) in a single vehicle crash in Seal Beach, California. She has not yet died, but she is so horribly injured, I do not expect her to ever be restored to the young woman I once knew and very much admired.
To my further horror, her accident was fueled and probably caused by alcohol, which seems to play a part in many of these kinds of incidents. I say "incidents", because they are not truly 'accidents,' because alcohol plays a large part in the cause because it alters our judgment, and allows us to make decisions we would ordinarily not make.
Up until recently, I was an avid cyclist, and used to ride Pacific Coast Highway from Huntington Beach to Newport Coast to Pelican Hill, and one time to Laguna Beach and back. I gave that up after seeing a fatal cycle accident, and myself being hospitalized over a weekend with a severe leg injury after being thrown off the bike, face first onto the pavement. The accident could have ended my life had I landed on my head and broken my neck or severed my spine.
That incident brought home to me the danger of riding anything, bicycle or large motorcycle in such a danger place as Pacific Coast Highway. I was basically 'naked' with only a cycling helmet protecting me from a fatal injury, with my entire body exposed to a horrific injury, that would be unavoidable in a collision with another vehicle.
In one such incident, I accidentally hit an SUV in the rear bumper while trying to avoid the rear end when they stopped quickly at a lighted intersection at Beach Blvd and PCH.
All this is to say, that a two wheeled vehicle is so very vulnerable and at risk, no matter how careful a rider can be, and to be hit by a drunken or otherwise impaired driver may often be fatal or life altering.
The highway slaughter is not, as we all know, limited to motorcycles, and I recently read of a Cyber Truck crashing and catching fire, after jumping a curb, at high speed and hitting a wall and tree, burning to death three of the 19 year old kids inside with one badly burned survivor.
Please be careful my friends over the upcoming dangerous holidays and don't become a victim of highway slaughter on our streets and highways.
