Do you feel obligated to spend the holidays with certain people?

And if so, WHY? I have known so many people who will express dread about being with their dysfunctional family on holidays, but they go anyway and act like they actually believe they HAVE TO. As if someone is putting a harness and leash on them and putting them in the car and bringing them their family. As if they’re not adults with agency. I have never understood this. If I don’t want to see someone who makes me miserable, I won’t go out of my way to spend my time with them.

I have no issues with my family but their friends are also joining with their daughter who is uncivilized.
I'm being expected to go on vacation and get along with that annoying, negative dramatic bee, egoistic, show off and selfish female.

eh kinda when it comes to my mother. She's had a hard life and gave me a childhood better than other's there were bad things for sure, and sure i don't like her. But i wouldn't call her a bad mother. And she isn't bad to me. So i think spending time with her on Christmas is the least i can do.

It's no obligation. We're a close family. When in town I want to spend it with them. If I were out of town it would likely be spending it with family in another state or with a girlfriend's family which I've also done

Just my parents. Why? Because they're getting older and I realize I won't have much more time to spend with them.
So as much as they sometimes get on my nerves, I tolerate spending the holidays with them because I care for them. Believe me when I say I will not do that for ANYONE ELSE!

4 years ago, I was obligated to spend Christmas and every holiday with my big family (grand parents, cousins, aunts and uncles). I used to envy my friends who can spend their holidays with whoever they want.

However, I moved to different country and my grandma and grandpa have passed away. You have no idea how much I want to spend Christmas with that big family now, nothing is the same at all

I don't necessarily think that I feel obligated so much as it is a family tradition and in all honesty can just be fun to catch up with family members, I don't necessarily mind.
