Anyone wish holidays were more extreme to where almost everything shut down during them?

For instance Thanksgiving or Christmas many things are still open usually for sales or you forgot food item. But would you rather everything closed? Except for pharmacy, hospital and gas stations. No grocery stores even you'd just be fucked if you forgot some ingredient lol.

No. I see what you mean, and there was a time when I would've agreed, but after having spend the last two holiday seasons alone- and I don't mean "without a romantic partner", I mean ALONE- I've come to understand the value of having *something* available for those of us who have nowhere else to go.

Last Thanksgiving, nothing was open. I wound up spending it with a cousin of mine who died several years earlier- he was the only family I had who didn't object. The six feet of dirt that separated us was a much smaller distance than the walls of fear that kept me from everyone else. The cemetery wasn't open either, and my singing wound up loud enough to attract attention from whoever was inside the church, so I had to run- not an inappropriate way to memorialize that particular cousin- but the alternative would simply have been sitting at home alone for yet another day. And I'm far from the only person who'd be sentenced to that. Let there be something, at least.

This is an ongoing debate.
So why do stores need to be closed?
Many people that work holidays get paid extra and they really can use the money.
Many are single, or cannot go to see their families so they will volunteer to work on the holidays.
So it is ok that football players work, firefighters, medics, police, the people that keep your lights on, the ones that make it possible to watch tv, in the northern climates the people that will plow the roads, the tow truck driver that comes to change your tire that is flat...
The list of those that work tirelessly behind the scenes is endless so you can go over the river and through the woods to get where you want to go.
Without all of those people working you would be just as screwed or worse as the person that needed something for a store.
So all of those people and more can work, just not retail stores?
Who decides?

When I was younger. Almost everything did shut down on major holidays. Even most places weren’t open on regular Sundays Because of the blue laws.
I know people say about the people that do work on the holidays get overtime pay. I worked for 41years and worked most of them. If I didn’t volunteer, I was ordered to work them. So when I finally had enough seniority to not be forced. I volunteered anyway so a younger person would not be taken away from his family during the holidays.
Now they can not find people that will work the weekend, let alone the holidays.
The world doesn’t stop turning on the holidays because of the people willing to work weekends and holidays!
Wouldn’t bother me for the stores to once again close on Sundays and holidays!

The pharmacy I use is in a major grocery and other things store, so it would have to be open. Plus, the gas station is there also. Those places usually offer holiday pay to get people to work on those days and those who want to be home can do so.

I would love to see the non-essential places close as it would allow families spend the time together however, I used to work the holidays and loved the triple pay

Around where I live, most things are closed on Christmas, including closing early in Christmas Eve. That allows families to get together, which is the reason for the season.

I don't shop or use services on holidays. There should be days where service employees can have a day off.
