For us it's a foreign tradition, but it catche on quite a lot. I'm pretty neutral about it, but my wife always loved it and never misses the chance (except during the pandemic) to to decorate the house and get dressed up for it, followed naturally by a Halloween party - actually two, the first one for the children of our friends, with sweets and funny spooky stuff, and after 10PM for us grown-ups, with "grown-ups drinks" and horror movies.

I like Halloween.
When I was a kid I loved it. I remember by first costume. My family had gone to see Darby O'Gill and the Little People at a drive-in theater. I loved that movie. So, when Halloween came along, I wanted to be a banshee.
So my mom put together a costume with a scary mask.
The next year, I was into dinosaurs. So my mom made an amazing dinosaur costume. It included, I think she said it was a horse head that really looked good as a dinosaur once she put plastic Halloween finger nails in for teeth and painted the tips red.
Anyway, I went trick or treating every year until I was in my early teens. I wasn't very old when my mom stopped escorting me. As I got older, my range expanded. We started carrying pillow cases for the candy and covering many blocks. The local parks also had events on Halloween where there were games and prizes and candy.
A kid at school (6th -8th grades) had a Halloween-themed party every year near Halloween. Attendees didn't wear costumes. But there were fun games. For example, they would put chairs in a circle in the garage. Once everyone was seated, they turned off the lights and passed things around the circle and say it was something like guts or an eyeball. Kids passed it to each other from hand to hand and were thrillingly grossed out. The guts were cooked spaghetti and the eyeball may have been an olive or something.
In high school I started going to Halloween parties with my friends.
It was fun taking girls to haunted houses.
One year in the 70s, I took my girlfriends and some other friends to Universal Studios during their Halloween season. That was fun.
In my late 20s and 30s, I sometimes took my sister and niece or a girlfriend to places around the Los Angeles area that had great Halloween displays. One house in particular was somewhere around Studio City. You could walk around the front and side of their yard and look through the living room windows. The owner had worked for Disney exec and had Disney quality, haunted house stuff.
My wife and I moved to our home in 2002. No kids are going to walk up our twisting, 1/2 mile long, gravel driveway past gnarled oaks in the dark. There could be vampires and werewolves.
But for over 10 years, beginning in 2005 or so, some friends would have a Halloween party. They supplied the sloppy Joes, guests brought wine and other foods, and candy for the trick or treaters. We would all be in costume and the radio would be playing Halloween music. They lived on a street where almost every house was ornately decorated, so there were hundreds of trick or treaters.
We could sit or stand on the porch, or come to the door when someone knocked. It was super fun to hand out treats to kids. The little ones are adorable. Some of the older ones have really cool costumes. When the high schoolers came around later, some of the girls used the night as an opportunity to let their suppressed freakiness out by dressing sexy and call it a costume.
From around 2005 through 2019 (before covid), some friends would have a karaoke party at their house near Halloween and we would all wear costumes.
Connections broke down when the covid hysteria hit. Friends haven't had any parties and we've sort of lost touch. My wife and I haven't done any Halloween stuff for three years now.

No, I'm not. I get why some people are - they love to play, the fantasy of it, the excuse to scare people or be sexy. But it's not my thing. It's probably a combination of me not caring about fantasy much, and I don't like tacky things, and most costumes are. I like ones that look as realistic as possible. Like an alter ego, but not a complete departure from what real life looks like.
I was just telling my husband the other day how when I was a kid I remember the parents not being with me/us (whatever group I was with), and we walked around the neighbourhood, knocked on doors, weren't chaperoned. I really don't think it's great that some kids are driven in cars, taken to a different neighbourhood with 'better homes and candy'. I think it should be a trek, and kids should have to work for the treats.

I feel quite similar to you, I am more neutral than anything else. But it's a big thing for my wife, and I don't see the reason to deny her.
I think that when you were a kid maybe there was more trust in other adults, maybe because you could have been dropped off in a "good neighbor". Years ago children used to be more independent on certain things, but ironically enough, the parents could be more authoritarian on other aspects.
The house is large and my daughter's room is on the second floor, where no one can disturb her and we plan on keeping the noise down while alternating on checking up on her. That said, I think I'll do the majority of the check-ups and attend to her when necessary, so my wife can enjoy more her evening - she's the one who spends the majority of the time with her, and she can use a break once in a while.
Yes, there was more trust back then, but the crime stats have not worsened. There are no more child abductions now. It's anxiety that is way up in society and parenting now. Media shows, feeds into, and creates this paranoia. I get it. I grew up as X-Gen, "the latch-key generation." Lots more independence. My husband, too. The main rule was, "Just get home for dinner." (Him, not me.)
Exactly, it was quite similar here. And it's quite telling that in the majority of the crimes that see children as victims, the perpetrators are not strangers, but relatives or someone they are acquainted with.
I grew up similarly to you and your husband depending on who I was staying with - my aunt was stricter on the hours and I had to immediately answer her calls. When I lived with my mother I was a bit older (14-15) so she was laxer about it - "Just be home on time to make dinner". She was negated for cooking and once I made the mistake of not eating what she had made - frozen scallops, burned outside but still frozen inside - she decided that either I cooked or we ate cold foods.
lolol oh man. Yep, been there, the child being the responsible, level-headed one sometimes. Not a great dynamic, but what can you do, right. Got to adapt to whatever life dumps on you.

I know someone who was sexually abused by a stepmother. It can happen anywhere.
Yeah lol. To be fair, she did try at times. She could be difficult, but there were moments where she was really "mom".

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I love dressing up decorating my window haha I live in apartment building so I can only decorate so much. But love going on haunted hay rides, going to haunted house, watching horror movies hell yeah

When I think off some of the homes I have seen decorated with (literally) hundreds of dollars of inflatable junk, it makes me wince to think that many of these people are going to be the same ones who moan about not having enough money for basic living and saving.
As with most of the "minor" holidays, it has become far too overblown.
No, Halloween was big, and a lot of fun, when I was a kid, growing up. Now, though, it's overly materialized. Stores start pushing Halloween sales in June. And it's no longer safe for kids to go roaming around their neighborhoods.

I like Halloween, but I'm reluctant to have my children go trick or treating because of the fentanyl crisis. It would be impossible to tell if someone put a few salt grain sized bits of it candy to lethal effect.
An unfortunate result of being so open to immigration is that here in Canada at least, in the bigger cities we've stopped being a high trust society.

I have 3 boys 10,8,&6 What do you think! LOL The boys and their father have decorated outside (with some mighty strange things I might add) along with our patio. The four of them had a blast carving pumpkins, one guess who got to clean up the mess! Restaurant not open yet from hurricane damage so didn't have to decorate it this season.
When I was a kid I used to dress up as a vampire and go trick or treating in my neighborhood with brother. Out grew it in my teens and 20's and don't celebrate Halloween with candies or dressing up. Our church from 2001 to 2024 has a annual alternative to Halloween where my parents and me would volunteer with the events like basketball, food, registration, cleaning, and setting up the chairs and tables.
Halloween is my favorite holiday. I absolutely luv everything about the holiday. As it grows in popularity and capitalism, i appreciate the season less. People can and will destroy literally anything and everything for a buck.

I Go to a Brothers house and We go Out Scaring people and taking Helpless Peoples candy away from them at the end of the night we got a lot of candy 🍭 that’s the one holiday I Actually enjoy the other holidays I Hang out looking like the grinch.
I love it. I’m always in charge of decorating the house, my family and I dress up and hand out sweets when the kids knock. Then we watch scary movies or Halloween episodes of our favourite shows later on in the night.
I’m not big on Halloween, I understand for kids. But if people are going to call me immature for wearing a baseball or hockey jersey with jeans and some sneakers in my 30s one day. Why is it ok for a grown ass woman to dress half naked? Stupid.
