I love the Harry Potter and Justin Bieber references in that article. I don't think it's gone, but I suspect that older, former generations are not passing it down or that younger generations say Ewwwwww! or something.
I know we have a sprig attached to a pretty bell decoration on the door frame between the kitchen and the dining room. My wife and I use it as an excuse (not that we need it). That gets a range of expressions from the kids but also keeps them seeing that mom and dad can be physical and affectionate.

Not in our house it isn't... We have a most convenient piece of mistletoe place in the roof of our porch for this very family custom.
We still follow that tradition, but we weren't able to get the mistletoe this year.
