Why do guys flirt when they have a partner?

I’ve posted about this guy fairly recently. I genuinely thought that he might have a crush on me or at the very least find me attractive. I now feel very stupid.


This guy at work caught my eye. It started when I noticed him gazing and smiling at me. He always held the smile and eye contact, whereas I was the first one to look away.


I eventually said hi to him and he had a big smile on his face when I did this. I tried to say hi to him again afterwards, but he was being shy/awkward as he avoided eye contact and looked in the other direction.


Then last week, he suddenly got a surge of confidence and said hi, so we started talking. I introduced myself and he asked me what department I worked in. He said twice that he should come and check out where I worked. He was holding eye contact and smiling the whole time, fidgeting with something and moving slightly closer to me. Approximately 15 minutes after I finished my shift, he was seen by my colleagues walking through the corridor and staring into our office.


He’s always had a big smile on his face when I said hi.


And then I saw him today and we started chatting. I asked him if he was working between Christmas and new year, to wish he said no. He then told me he was going to Barcelona with his partner.


I feel like an idiot. Why would he show interest in me and then drop a bombshell like that?
