We're a few days out from Christmas and I've caught a cold š«
5 moA clove of raw garlic, pineapple, ginger lemon tea, raw honey (especially manuka honey), sucking on a lemon or juicing it and drinking the juice straight, wearing a scarf around my neck and trying to sweat it out in bed. And if I have a stuffed nose, spicy food actually helps to break up the mucus and let me breathe easier. Lots of liquids and soup. Rinse and repeat until I'm better.
I try to stay as natural as possible and not rely on artificial supplements.
There's a lot of science behind each of those recommendations, which could take a long time to explain, but I'll try to give the short version.
Raw garlic has a component called allicin, which is only formed when RAW garlic is crushed, chopped, or chewed. It's antiviral and antibacterial. It boosts immune cell function, and it's anti-inflammatory. If you can get past the taste and the burn you feel in your throat and stomach when you have it, it can definitely reduce your cold's duration.
Pineapple has a component called bromelain, which is highly anti-inflammatory and reduces swelling. Bromelain is so potent that it's used in medical settings to reduce post-surgical inflammation. Pineapple also has vitamin C, and a high water content (86%), which adds to soothe the throat. Chilled pineapple is ideal.
And now I'm tired of typing, but there's obviously more science to share on the others mentioned.
But I shared the stuff that most people most people don't practice, which is the raw garlic and pineapple. Do everything I mentioned, and I guarantee it'll reduce your cold's length... especially the raw garlic suggestion.00 Reply

Before bed the various Night Time Cold Medicines.
@DryGermanGuy, Was Jagermeister intended as a medicine? It tastes so much like nightime cold medicines: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%A4germeister

Can't take cold medicine unfortunately only thing I can use is a nose spray which is only once every 10 hrs

Yeah, the original idea of JƤgermeister was to be a digestif bitter, but honestly I always thought of these as another excuse to bring alcohol into the lives of elderly people.
A few years ago the company noticed the original target group dying off, so they started marketing JƤgermeister as the hip party drink. Itās disgusting stuff, imho. š¤¢š„“ - 5 mo
@DryGermanGuy And in the USA, this marketing *worked*. Why? Because a whole subculture of former American teenagers, who grew up drinking "NyQuil" or other nighttime cold medicines as a legal way to get intoxicated under 21, discovered it. Jagermeister tastes *just like* NyQuil or other generic versions of those night time cold medicines.

Yikes. You learn something new every day. :-o
In the EU legislators are encouraging pharma companies to phase out alcohol to limit an early alcoholic imprint on children. I wanted to ask you if it's the same in the U. S., but I think I already know the answer. - 5 mo
@DryGermanGuy Yes, the USA Food and Drug Administration now prevents selling cold medicines to minors. But at the time (1980s), well, no comment. :D
5 moYour own immune system should cope but it's best to make sure it's got everything it needs to do it's job. That means a healthy vitamin packed diet and not some crap vitamin pill. Eat little and often, avoid junk and alcohol. You want your body to divert all it's attention to the disease not dealing with 6 pints of beer and a pizza.
Let your body do it's job. That nose is running for a reason, you're not coughing for fun, that explosive diarrhea is a disease eviction notice. Eat well, stay hydrated, and watch a movie.20 Reply

@DryGermanGuy yeah... you can't really cure a cold, only alleviate symptoms so no product can't ever claim that
also, in America you can sue companies for poisoning yourself if the box/bag didn't explicitly say "don't drink this poison" lol... - 4 mo
@NathanDavis It's sad that the classic disclaimer "USE ONLY AS DIRECTED", no longer carries the legal weight that it should.

m 5 mopersonally... I ignore it as much as possible
I eat as much as chicken soup as possible and cold beverages too
the rest, I take as many pills as possible as well (but only acetaminophen though)
and I get to work outside, on the yard, cleaning and clearing or fixing something for distraction... I guess I do "sweat it off"
is it annoying? can it hurt? sometimes... I guess, but it would be worse if I just whine and complain while doing nothing at all, lol10 Reply Natural vitamin C and zinc tablets. Zinc boosts immune system a little bit and vitamin C makes white killer cells more effective, this reduces inflammation and cold duration time.
For throat natural honey, there are some pastilles with lidocaine available in some countries

5 moI dont believe im sick. I tell myself im already better I just dont feel good... sounds dumb I know, but It makes it a lot easier to keep doing life rather then lay in bed being lazy to get better. Losing momentum is the real sickness for me the cold will come and go. I can't let it take my momentum with it.

5 moIf you have a fever, drink at least a liter of water. Wrap yourself in a hooded sweatshirt, sweats or blanket. Eat the hottest chips and salsa you can handle until you sweating profusely. This will burn it right out of you. PS > Spend the next 12 hours close to a bathroom and continue to drink lots of water with electrolytes. Take some probiotics too.
00 ReplyEmbrace it. Your body knows what it's doing. There's still a good few days away from Christmas.
10 ReplyFire cider! You got to make it and alas, it's too late if you are already battling a cold as it takes a month to cure. Here's a basic recipe. I expound on it and add my own herbs and various types of honey. Enjoy and I hope you feel better!

5 moSorry but there's no magic yet for getting rid of a cold virus. Your best bet is to have a healthy diet and stay fit. Give your body the best chance of fighting off the virus quickly. For me that's usually 3-4 days of mildly annoying sniffles.

Drink much water or tea
No sugar or fat
No ready made food - no fast food

There's nothing a dr can do for a common cold
- 5 mo
Doctors donāt ādo nothingā for colds. They control inflammation and give anti-inflammatory and symptom-control meds early, which changes how sick you become.
- 5 mo
So... ibuprofen which i can get from the pharmacy/ already have a load of lmao
- 5 mo
Ibuprofen alone doesnāt address nasal inflammation, histamine response, or rule out complications.
Itās a poor thing, that you think that Ibuprofen you got from pharmacy ā full symptom management or medical assessmentš„² - 5 mo
@itsannalee Inflammation is just your immune system fighting infection. If you reduce infammation you stay sick longer.
- 5 mo
Mild anti-inflammatory meds relieve symptoms but donāt stop your immune system from fighting the virus. They help you feel better without making the cold last longer. Lol

Everything the dr can give me is stuff i can get from the pharmacy without going to the doctor
