Interesting take, but what if you follow those vows, and your partner doesn't? At what point does a person give up and just stop 'cherishing'? How many years of being taken for granted, ignored, denied, and used before you just stop doing everything *you* promised to do?

They don't care, madam triple B.

They feel they can just divorce at will if things go bad.

Many times there is adultery and abuse going on. So if there is cheating and beating, they want out also but can't condemn them.

Cheating or abuse are valid grounds for divorce. But if people know that can't stay faithful to one woman or one man, why even get married?

Actually you are not promising. You are entering into a contract between yourself, them, and the β€˜State’. The vow is affirming this contract to be entered which after the exchange both sign a license along with a witness to this contract and they who presided over the ceremony thus binding this contract between you and them β€˜with’ the State. That’s Amore! :p

For once, we disagree... Those words are meant to be a promise to one another, don't utter words, promises you don't mean just for sake of ceremony... Say what you mean and mean what you say... Fuck the piece of paper, or the state... I'm talking the real reason people "vow" to stay together, otherwise... Just don't get married

I am not being cold about this, what I am saying is this is actually contractual as the β€˜State’ is the third binding party. I know what you mean, don’t misunderstand me here, but this is a contract which is why it takes the State to dissolve the contract and not two people merely walking away. I get your point and again, I am not trying to be cold, this is just the reality of what the β€œvows” are, at least where the State is concerned. Frankly, perhaps if people treated it as a contract people would take the vows more seriously. Just a thought to consider. Devil is in the details. .

The reason to make it official is so when you die, your wife and children get the benefits the state can fuck them out of without that binding contract... Other than that... Agree you shouldn't need a piece of paper to do what you should do for someone if you truly love them

My blood mother died horribly of cancer. My father waited at home for the phone to ring.
    But then...
My step mother died of colon cancer in hospice. My father was in the bed with her. She died in his arms.

Except they were realistic for all of history. The first evidence of marriage we have is from 2350 BC. If they have managed to have those values for all of those literally thousands of years, then expecting people to be able to handle it now isn't unreasonable.

Nowadays the whole concept of wedding is just a formality.
If people really wanted to lead a happy life they could've done so without any vows.

Yes because the people who made those vows actually followed them when they were created not a single one of them didn't this has been going on forever nothing new it's our access to information that make people think everything is worse now than what it was in the past
