How long should you date before getting engaged and how long should you be engaged for before getting married?

Personally, I would propose after dating for 1 1/2 to 2 years of dating. I would not be with someone that long if I did not feel that she was the one I was supposed to end up with. After dating for over 1 year, you will know them well enough and should be able to tell if you are compatible with them. I am a grown man and I want a serious committed relationship. I have no reason to wait 5, 6, 7, or more years to officially commit to her through marriage. Most people my age, early to mid 20's, seem to be afraid of serious commitment and wait to get married after dating for over 5 years. I know many people my age who have been dating for 5 to 10 years and are still not engaged. I am not like them at all. If I love her and make her my first priority (my romantic relationship almost always comes first) and she feels the same, I am ready to propose. If she rejects my proposal, that means we are not on the same page and she clearly is not nearly as invested in our relationship as I thought she was. A proposal rejection would result in a break up. I definitely do not want to waste years with someone who won't fully commit to me, which is why I will only propose if I know for a fact that she wants to marry me. But if she still isn't sure if she wants to marry me after 2 years, there is no reason for me to continue with a relationship if my feelings aren't reciprocated.

My wife and I dated for a little over 2 years and then were engaged for about 6 months before we got married but it’s what you guys think that matters I would say give yourself enough time to really get to know each other and I know this goes against a lot of peoples beliefs but I’d definitely recommend living together before marriage so you can be sure you’re compatible and discuss everything you can think of to be sure everything is out on the table and no suprises

I don't think there's a set time to get engaged.
Because well marriage isn't what it used to be.
People claim it to be scary or a "commitment for a lifetime"
But modern society doesn't teach us about the long term.
So I'm not sure if people are dating individuals for the right reasons. (but then again who defines that, it's about individual needs, so I'm kind of contradicting myself really🤐)

I don't want to seem cynical but I think it might be easier if you marry the person because it feels right, as and when they ask.

Normally i’d say date at least two years before engagement and be engaged up to a year before marriage. But things can change. When you’re in love, anything could happen at anytime

Grandparents: married after 6 weeks, stayed together
Aunt & Uncle: married after 3 months, stayed together
My Parents: married after 5 years, worst goddamn divorce on planet earth

I have come to notice through observation that couples who wait 5 to 10 or more years to get married tend to wait so long because they are afraid to fully commit and are not sure about their true feelings. People who have been dating for so long often feel pressured to get married, even though they aren't mature enough for marriage. Then, when the fully commit to marriage, they realize that the responsibility that comes with marriage is too overwhelming and they leave. People who are close and loyal to one another often get married faster because they know they found the one and have no reason to wait a long time to marry. This isn't always the case with everyone because sometimes people rush into marriage because they are desperate for a relationship or they have to wait years to marry due to certain circumstances. However, it tends to be the case, more often than not, that people who are secure about their relationship want to marry within only a few months or years. As for people that are unsure how they feel about their relationship, they often try to put off or avoid marriage because they are not ready to make that commitment.
