That's up to the couple getting married.

I've been to weddings that were VERY simple and only had a couple dozen people attend with the reception held at a local park, where I volunteered to cook the chicken on a grill.

Then there were other weddings I went to, where the wedding party was 20 people, the reception had over 300 people at a local golf club where steak and chicken was served.

As for my wife and I, we had a simple wedding, and didn't spend more than a couple thousand dollars, if that much. As far as I am concerned, spending a ridiculous volume of money on that party is a waste. People are FAR more interested in seeing a couple GET married rather than placing importance on the "party" or the extravagance of the wedding itself.

As for the weddings I mentioned above - both couples in those weddings are still married. And neither one is any "more" married than the other, just because of the $$ spent.

I think it is ridiculous. I have seen people spend 20 thousand dollars on a wedding. My wife and I did it on a budget.
We are giving our kids a fixed amount of money when they are ready to get married. They can spend it any way they want. Use it for a down payment on a house of blow it all on a big wedding.

I think weddings are getting pretty expensive these days. We’ve been married 17 years now. I think the decision has to be made as to how much the tab you’re going to pick up and if parents or any relatives are willing to help out. We’ve known a lot of other couples that have spent exorbitant amounts of money to have a very fancy wedding and go into pretty big credit card debt which creates a stress on the marriage in different ways. The most important part about marriage should be that you love each other and that you are ready for that level of commitment.

Only poor people think it is unnecessary. THIS IS YOUR LIFE! As far as we know you only get 1. If you want a wedding GET a wedding! If you can't afford it then go earn more money to live the life that you want. Stop playing it safe. You're going to die anyway...
