Well this really depends on who you're asking. Not everyone is the same. Personally no what I want is love even without a ring or with the nicest ring in the world. Love is what matters most.

I was under the impression that it was the engagement ring that had the fancy diamond, not the wedding one; those tend to just be a hunk of gold. Given the changes in socioeconomics, the "here's a down payment on the woman I'm essentially permanently leasing" idea really should've fallen by the wayside; I guess De Beers is even more powerful than I thought.

Personally, I wouldn't care; money's just money to me (life without it truly sucks, but there are far more important things out there). And given how destructive gold mining is (it's something like 100 tons of displaced dirt for every ounce of gold), and the horrors of the African (and coming soon, Asian!) blood diamond industry (there ARE lab-made ones, but people are biased against them), I'd probably go for another option.

I know a guy who proposed to his now-wife by putting a sign in front of the ring of sequoias he'd had planted for her; that's not a ring you can wear, but as a romantic gesture, it's hard to top- they live for like three thousand years, so it'll around LONG after bands of gold have fallen apart. It also struck me as a very Californian thing to do, and a reminder that that isn't always a bad thing (itself a rare but important thing these days). I suspect I'd try something similar- maybe I'd build a giant Stonehenge-style ring; THAT would definitely make an impression. Come to think of it, maybe I did- at some point, I'll go wandering, and get SO lost that I somehow wind up in 3,000 BC on another continent, fall in love with some British lady, realize that the tradition of wedding rings doesn't exist yet, then remember this comment and build Stonehenge as a symbol of love, then live out my remaining years laughing at a five thousand year-long private joke.

That sounds like something I'd do.

While traditionally, diamonds have been the rock people want, alternative gem stones are very quickly rising in popularity as the ethics of the diamond industry comes to light. A good alternative that’s easy to fool the naked eye is a white sapphire, for example. It looks the same, and it’s lab grown for much cheaper so you could get a much bigger stone for a fraction of the cost of a diamond. Only a jeweler would be able to tell the difference between the two. Personally, I like the idea of using a birthstone engagement ring, like a ruby or an emerald, something meaningful. However, some women only want diamonds and nothing else will do, nothing wrong with being a traditionalist but it all depends on the person and situation.

Why does it matter? A diamond is just a rock. It’s carbon that’s been put under so much pressure that it changes to a compressed carbon structure. What makes it valuable is the fact that we think it has value. The same is true about money. It’s just a piece of paper that we place value upon. So you can put anything or nothing on a wedding ring. After all it’s really just a symbol of your love. If you equate the size of a diamond in the amount of love you feel for your partner then don’t you think it’s superficial.

No definitely not. You can choose for a plain ring without stones or choose for an alternative stone like sapphire or a ruby. You do have to look at the durability because some gem stones easily scratch or crack. But there's enough information about that online.
