I think there's definitely a difference between Submission and mutual respect. One is very outdated, the other is something people in a relationship should strive for. Submission isn't really healthy. It's often what leads women to let themselves stay in abusive relationships, and in the case of submissive men, it ties them to toxic women.

Submission doesn't have to equal slavery or control. There are various kinds of submission. Submission in the modern context is not the context of a traditional marriage

Read Ephesians 5 and when you can do those things as a Man then you will not have an issue with submission. Study Agape, Phila, and Eros too. Agape leads to no submission issues.

Depends on in what context and secondly what specifically. Not all submission is justified just for the sake of submission.

Explain more. I know that submission is a spectrum. I was kinda asking this question to goofy troll women and to see what people would say. I dont wish to control a female, but them catering to me and letting me lead a good amount of the time would be nice. I wouldn't take my wifes freedom away.

Your initial questions said "main reasons" and I think there could be many and justified, and hence my casting of a rather broad net of "depends on in what context and secondly what specifically". Two of the main reasons, in general (not saying your situation or all relationships) would be that a husband was trying to control as opposed to lead or be the head of and the second would be a sexual situation where the husband wanted to be dominant and the wife didn't want that.

You pointed out the way in which it might work and wouldn't get to the point of "refusal" and that is communication and agreement. On who does what and who leads.

The problem is, I think, that we (big we) have allowed "submit" to take on a pejorative connotation. And these days the word is imbued with visions of all a person's rights and agency and freedoms being taken away.

That said, there's a element of truth to that. And, so, I think the better solution is not so much who submits to whom, rather, couples decide on who does what and if there is a decision to be made and there has to be a tiebreaker, there's an agreement that in most cases it is person X. And some special situations need to be re-litigated.

Here's what I think is the key: if someone is refusing to submit, ask why. It probably isn't just because; it's probably a result of their perception that their freedom, rights, agency, etc., are being abridged. And that feeling/perception is their reality.
